Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rashid Magomedov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Victor Stroev! The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Aleksandr Martynov and Dmitry Maklakov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A head kick from Stroev lands but Magomedov takes it in his stride. Stroev looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Stroev is looking to advance position but Magomedov won't allow it. Magomedov trying to control from the bottom.
Stroev landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Magomedov actively working from the bottom here. Stroev is working for a submission of some sort.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Magomedov wants to get back to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Magomedov blocking the ground and pound attempt from Stroev. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Magomedov is refusing to be controlled, as Stroev sits in half guard. Magomedov pushes Stroev off looking to stand but Stroev dives back in and keeps control.
Stroev thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Magomedov's head. Magomedov really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Stroev is thwarting Magomedov's attempts to control the position. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Stroev is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Magomedov!
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Stroev throwing strikes but Magomedov recovers to half guard. A much better position. Stroev wants to control but Magomedov is keeping him busy. Magomedov looking for submissions off his back. Magomedov is looking to improve his position.
Stroev is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Magomedov tries to roll over but Stroev keeps him under control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Stroev keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Stroev keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Stroev gets a double leg takedown into Magomedov's guard. Magomedov has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Stroev has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage. Magomedov escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Stroev scores with a takedown into Magomedov's guard. Magomedov is breathing heavily. Stroev is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Stroev wants to pass the guard but Magomedov is keeping the position. Magomedov keeping moving, preventing Stroev from controlling successfully. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Stroev engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Stroev wants to control from the top but Magomedov keeps moving. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Victor Stroev dominated that round. That's time! Magomedov's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Stroev fails with an attempt to clinch.
Stroev drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Magomedov trying to keep a closed guard but Stroev is proving a slippery customer.
Stroev preventing the sweep. Magomedov looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Stroev wants to control from the top but Magomedov keeps moving. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Stroev pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Magomedov is keeping the position for now. Stroev is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Magomedov looking to hit a scissor sweep but Stroev is one step ahead there.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Stroev shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Magomedov napping and manages to drive through into side control! Stroev is breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Magomedov struggling a bit here. Stroev really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Magomedov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Stroev throws a strike aimed at the side of Magomedov's head but Magomedov avoids it well. Stroev tries to move into full mount but can't pass Magomedov's legs. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Magomedov is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Magomedov tries to control but Stroev manages to take his back.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Magomedov is trying to get back to his feet but Stroev has full control of the position and if anything, Magomedov has just worked his way into a worse spot. Stroev is riding his opponent, not letting Magomedov buck him off. Stroev is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Magomedov has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here. Magomedov tries to break free.
Magomedov staying busy and making it hard for Stroev to control. Magomedov wants to control his opponent's hands but Stroev gets his hands free.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Stroev doesn't have the hooks in and Magomedov manages to turn into his guard.
Magomedov won't allow Stroev to sweep him here. Magomedov's corner is telling him to maintain position. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Stroev can do anything to dispel that myth. Stroev wants to get back to his feet but Magomedov passes into half guard.
Magomedov frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Magomedov is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Stroev to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Stroev shrugs it off. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Stroev tries to improve his position but Magomedov has taken his back! Magomedov has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Stroev tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Magomedov pushes Stroev away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!
