Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Minkki Jakku! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Howlett! The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Chris Downing and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jakku connects with a right hand. Howlett shakes it off. Howlett tries to sprawl but Jakku drives through with a takedown into half guard. Howlett is trying to escape back to his feet but Jakku uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Jakku throws a strike aimed at the side of Howlett's head but Howlett avoids it well. Jakku controlling from side mount. Jakku stands up and we're back to a striking position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jakku darts in looking for a takedown but Howlett gets double underhooks and turns Jakku into the cage. Howlett unleashes a big counter combination but Jakku bobs and weaves and avoids any damage. We've been hearing reports that Jakku has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Jakku scores with a takedown into Howlett's guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jakku throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Jakku gets to his feet. Howlett looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Jakku throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Howlett unleashes a big counter combination but Jakku bobs and weaves and avoids any damage. Excellent takedown into side control there by Jakku. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Jakku prevents Howlett from escaping the position. Howlett really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jakku. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Jakku decides to stand up, so the ref orders Howlett to his feet. Jakku shoots in for a takedown but Howlett shows good takedown defense. Despite the aggression on Howlett's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter. Jakku gets a double leg takedown into Howlett's guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Howlett is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Jakku engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Jakku looking to pass the guard. Jakku scoring with some ground and pound.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jakku showing good wrestling skills to control the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Jakku missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Jakku loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Howlett can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Jakku controls the pace.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Jakku shoots for a takedown but Howlett saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Howlett throws a counter combo. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Minkki Jakku. That's going to take a lot out of him. Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Jakku.
Jakku shoots and misses and Howlett counters with a left to the body.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Jakku has his takedown stuffed and Howlett counters with a left and a right that stings Jakku. Jakku fails to land the takedown. Jakku throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Howlett tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Jakku is in Howlett's guard. Jakku controls from within his opponent's guard. Howlett keeping full guard, as Jakku tries to pass. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Minkki Jakku dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
A head kick misses from Jakku. As Jakku backs off Howlett throws a huge counter combo but Jakku manages to avoid it all. Jakku tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Howlett defends well and Jakku ends up having to push Howlett into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Howlett is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own. Jakku will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Howlett unleashes a big counter combination but Jakku bobs and weaves and avoids any damage. Jakku lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Howlett leaves Jakku with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. As Jakku backs off Howlett throws a huge counter combo but Jakku manages to avoid it all. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Minkki Jakku. That's going to take a lot out of him. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Howlett gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Jakku to score an easy takedown into full guard. Jakku is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Jakku is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Jakku postures up and lands a big shot to Howlett's brow. Jakku postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Howlett can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Jakku controls the pace.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. We've been informed that Howlett has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight. Jakku misses with a takedown attempt and Howlett counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jakku is looking to clinch but Howlett is avoiding it.
Howlett unleashes a big counter combination but Jakku bobs and weaves and avoids any damage. Jakku moves in looking to clinch but Howlett pushes him off. Nice takedown defense from Howlett. No joy for Jakku on that attempt. Despite the aggression on Howlett's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter. Jakku tries to close the distance and clinch but Howlett swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Howlett throws a counter combo. Jakku shoots in and bounces Howlett off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Jakku sitting in guard, not really doing much. Howlett wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Jakku manages to pass to side control.

Jakku is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Howlett doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Jakku. Jakku is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Howlett can do to turn this around? Jakku slows the pace down in half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jakku thows a left - swing and a miss! Jakku gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Howlett counters with a one-two to the body. Howlett stuffs the takedown attempt from Jakku. Jakku gets slowly back to his feet. Jakku is looking to clinch but Howlett is avoiding it.
Howlett unleashes a big counter combination but Jakku bobs and weaves and avoids any damage. Minkki Jakku is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jakku closes this distance looking for a takedown but Howlett circles away. Jakku shoots in but no luck this time. Howlett unleashes a big counter combination but Jakku bobs and weaves and avoids any damage. Jakku shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Howlett manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Howlett pushes Jakku off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jakku tries for a takedown but Howlett sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Jakku looks for a takedown but Howlett sprawls well. Howlett throws a counter combo. Jakku throws a sloppy head kick and Howlett counters with a right, left combo that wobbles Jakku badly! Howlett follows up with a massive right hook, straight to the bridge of the nose that knocks Jakku out cold! Oh wow, what a finish! Very reminiscent of Koscheck vs Yoshida as Howlett finished him against the cage.
