Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tim Pigeon! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mason Neil! The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Tatsuya Matsuyama.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A nice leg kick lands there from Neil. Tim Pigeon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Pigeon clinches. Pigeon lands a nice uppercut. Pigeon has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Neil clear over his head and slammed him to the mat! Pigeon looking to break Neil's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Neil remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Pigeon will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke! Pigeon has the hooks in. Neil is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Pigeon has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Neil has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Even with his hooks in, Pigeon manages to miss with strikes from the back. Neil is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Pigeon.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Pigeon thows a strike but Neil uses the opportunity to reverse the position! Great move by Neil as he ends up in Pigeon 's guard! Pigeon is pulling down on Neil's head to control his posture. Pigeon is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Neil is aware though and is defending well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Neil won't allow Pigeon to sweep him here. Neil postures up and lands a big shot to Pigeon's brow. Pigeon trying to control the position here. We've been hearing good reports from Pigeon's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Neil postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Pigeon keeping moving, preventing Neil from controlling successfully. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Pigeon seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Pigeon has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Pigeon tries to land a sweep but no joy. Neil missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Neil trying to control but Pigeon is working from the bottom. Pigeon might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Pigeon looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Pigeon has control of Neil's left arm, preventing Neil from doing any damage. Pigeon looking for a sweep. Not yet Pigeon, not yet. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Pigeon has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Neil is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Neil won't allow Pigeon to sweep him here. Neil postures up.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Pigeon is adopting a defensive guard.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Pigeon clinches up against the ropes. Neil tries to pull guard but Pigeon holds him up against the ropes and eventually Neil drops back down to his feet.

Pigeon is pressed up against the ropes. Neil has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Pigeon down to the mat. Pigeon avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Pigeon moves into the clinch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pigeon is leaning against Neil and scores with a nice uppercut to the body. Pigeon has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Neil regains guard immediately. Pigeon content to stall in guard here. Pigeon pushes down on Neil's leg and manages to get into half guard. That's four minutes gone in the round. Pigeon is taking a breather. Neil says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Pigeon is looking to take a break and control but Neil is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Pigeon takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Neil tries to roll over but Pigeon keeps him under control. Neil is staying active underneath Pigeon, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Pigeon passes the guard and advances to mount! Pigeon throws a wild left hand from mount and Neil manages to wriggle his way back to half guard. Pigeon is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Neil sees it coming and defends easily. Pigeon is working for a kimura but Neil is defending it quite comfortably.

Pigeon trying to control but Neil is working from the bottom. Neil wants to sweep here but Pigeon controlling him for the moment. Neil is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. That's eight minutes gone in the round. Pigeon swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Neil is now in Pigeon's guard. A big mistake from Pigeon there, giving up the dominant position! Neil with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Neil trying to control but Pigeon is working from the bottom. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Pigeon is on top in guard.

He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pigeon works his way back into a safe position though. Pigeon slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Neil wants to control but Pigeon postures up. Neil prevents Pigeon from improving position. Neil tries to get back to half guard but can't. Pigeon tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Pigeon has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Pigeon fails to land a wild elbow strike.

Pigeon shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Neil but Neil pushes him off and we're back to square one. Neil feints the counter takedown. Pigeon darts in and clinches Neil up against the ropes. Pigeon lands a body punch. Neil is trying to drag Pigeon to the mat but Pigeon just about manages to keep his footing. He used the ropes to his advantage there. Pigeon scores with a hook to the body. Pigeon successfully pulls guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Neil being controlled here momentarily. Pigeon bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Neil's guard. Pigeon in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Pigeon throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Neil works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pigeon won't allow Neil to sweep him here. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Pigeon accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Pigeon preventing the sweep. Neil keeping moving, preventing Pigeon from controlling successfully. Neil utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Pigeon trying to control but Neil is working from the bottom. Pigeon is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Neil is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Neil not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Pigeon staying calm. Pigeon is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Neil has escaped the position, nice work there. Pigeon working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter. Pigeon is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Neil knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Pigeon in side control, throwing shots but Neil defends. Pigeon trying to control the position but Neil is working away. Pigeon wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Neil, who protects the arm well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Pigeon tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Neil is looking to reverse the position. You can see the frustration on Neil's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Pigeon controlling the position from side mount. Pigeon is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Neil can do to turn this around? Pigeon tries to score with some ground and pound. Neil controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Pigeon tries for a kimura but Neil is defending well. Pigeon working away.

Pigeon misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

That's six minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Pigeon working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter. Pigeon remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Neil tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Pigeon wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Pigeon misses with the ground and pound. Pigeon goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Neil has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Pigeon but great work by Neil. Pigeon manages to get back to half guard. Neil seems to be looking for submissions.

Pigeon has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
