Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Frank Mir Jr! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Callum Welsh! The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Skip Squint and John Mangel.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Welsh throws a body kick that digs right into the meat. Some bone on bone action there as Mir Jr checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one. Welsh closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. Welsh gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Mir Jr to score an easy takedown into full guard. Welsh is looking to stand back up but Mir Jr counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Welsh. Mir Jr tries to stand but his arm is trapped. Welsh looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Welsh wants to control but Mir Jr is keeping busy and won't allow it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Welsh is trying to get back to full guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mir Jr decides to stand and escape the position. Mir Jr misses with a two punch combination.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mir Jr with a lazy takedown attempt and Welsh counters with a series of strikes. Mir Jr will be more careful next time no doubt. We've been hearing reports that Mir Jr has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Mir Jr shoots in and gets a takedown into Welsh's guard. Welsh is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Mir Jr tries to stand but Welsh is controlling from the bottom. Welsh is working an open guard so Mir Jr takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Mir Jr scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Welsh is rocked! Mir Jr closes the distance and lands a crisp combination that knocks Welsh out cold! Welsh corner are devastated, head in hands behind our commentary position. Poor guys.
