PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a bantamweight kickboxing rules bout between Rami Astalo (ranked 2226 p4p, 113 weight class) and Tony Maa (ranked 7351 p4p, 279 weight class). Astalo comes to the ring accompanied by Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff. Maa has chosen Ong-Bak's Theme Song as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Tony Maa told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rami Astalo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Tony Maa! The judges for this bout are William Gold, Donald Grub and James Ackerman.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Maa goes for a spinning back kick but it misses. Astalo forces Maa back against the ropes and clinches. Astalo breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Nice cross by Astalo. Astalo moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot. Maa throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Maa just misses with a punch to the body.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Astalo, right into the meat.
Maa takes a swing at Astalo's ribcage but misses. Maa misses with a series of wild punches.
Astalo listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Maa tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. Astalo manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Astalo lands with a cross. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Maa tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Maa takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh. Astalo ducks under a wild hook from Maa. Maa has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. A nice inside leg kick there by Astalo. That's going to slow Maa down. Astalo scores with a jab to the jaw. Maa fails in his attempt to clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Maa is pinned up against the ropes taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Astalo feints and then cracks Maa's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Maa down. Maa tries to clinch but Astalo moves away and Astalo connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Maa takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Maa tries to clinch and Astalo makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Astalo takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Maa is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Maa tries to clinch but Astalo moves out of range. Maa throws a head kick that misses. Astalo uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Maa.
Astalo appears to be looking for a big counter. Tony Maa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Maa throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Astalo smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. Astalo blocks a head kick by Maa.
This has been an exciting period of action! Maa tries a head kick but it misses.
Good exchange - Astalo coming out on top. Maa throws a shot from downtown. Astalo moves away and avoids it. Astalo connects with a right hand. Maa shakes it off. A combination from Maa does no damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Maa tries to clinch up but Astalo circles away and keeps his distance. A looping hook to the body misses from Maa. Astalo does a little dance to reset his feet. Astalo lands a nice hook to Maa's body. Maa takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. Astalo ducks down and throws a hook to the body. An inside leg kick lands from Astalo. Maa misses with an uppercut. Maa throws out a loose jab but Astalo uses good head movement to avoid it. Maa tries to clinch up but Astalo circles away and keeps his distance. Maa pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Astalo uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Maa. Maa tries a head kick but it misses.
Astalo circles away from the clinch attempt and Astalo counters with a head kick. That will keep Maa thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks! The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end. Maa moves to clinch but Astalo breaks away and Astalo cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Maa shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it. Maa tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. Astalo manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. A little feinted left hand from Astalo on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Astalo displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Maa throws out the jab. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rami Astalo dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Astalo scores with a hook to the body. Maa takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. Tony Maa is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Astalo moves out of range as Maa throws a body kick.
Astalo throws a quick inside leg kick. Astalo keeps the fight on the outside. Maa tries to clinch there but Astalo circles away.
Maa misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Jab, jab by Astalo - just one landing. Maa throws a wild body kick that Astalo sees coming a mile off. Maa throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Astalo moves into the clinch. Astalo lands on the inside with an uppercut. Astalo gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head. Astalo lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.
Maa is rocked! Astalo pushes Maa back against the ropes and unloads with a body punch. Maa throws a punch but it's blocked by Astalo. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Maa struggles to land a body shot inside as Astalo controls his hands.
Maa throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Astalo blocks it with crossed arms. Maa swings wildly with an uppercut but Astalo uses good head movement to avoid it. Astalo connects with a nasty looking knee right to Maa's face.
Maa is still on wobbly legs! Can Astalo finish him? Astalo lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Maa backwards. Astalo lands an elbow inside that Maa shrugs off.
That's one minute gone in the round. Astalo keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Maa's efforts to push away. A nice glancing elbow lands by Maa. Astalo lands with a short head shot on the inside. Maa looking to throw knees to the head but Astalo is blocking nicely.
Maa is trying to force a seperation but Astalo has the dominant position. Astalo lands a right hand that snaps the head of Maa backwards. Maa misses with some punches.
A nice left hand lands by Astalo.
Maa throws an elbow but it misses.
Astalo breaks from the clinch.
Astalo keeps the fight on the outside. Astalo jinks towards his opponent looking like he wants to counter with a mid kick but doesn't commit. Maa misses with a head kick.
Maa tries to clinch up letting Astalo counter with a right hand. Maa stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Astalo. Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Astalo.
Rami Astalo is winning the standup battle so far. Maa doesn't manage to clinch there - Astalo circles away.
Nice defenses there by Astalo. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Astalo lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Good leg kick by Astalo there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Astalo keeps the fight on the outside. Maa tries to clinch up but Astalo circles away and keeps his distance. Maa tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Astalo counters with a straight right hand. Maa wants to clinch up but Astalo keeps it at a distance. Maa takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. Astalo fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Maa has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Astalo connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Maa tries to move into range but Astalo moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand. Astalo thuds his right hand into Maa's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Maa tries to close the distance and clinch but Astalo swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Astalo lands a head shot. Astalo is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Maa can do to turn this around? Maa takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Maa tries a head kick but it misses.
Maa walks straight into a perfectly timed right hook, crumpling him to the floor! Maa is in all kinds of trouble here - can he beat the count? 3,4,5,6,7,8,9....10 - he's out and it's by a long way too - he didn't ever look like beating that count!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punch). Rami Astalo! Rami Astalo gave a mention to RAGS of a RONIN in his post fight interview. That will please them (and hopefully generate some sales).
