PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dex Arial (ranked 2993 p4p, 400 weight class) and Duc Minh Pham (ranked 3037 p4p, 406 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Arial might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Thunder. Both fighter's entrance songs getting the crowd jumping here.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dex Arial!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Duc Minh Pham!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pham bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Arial's head.

Arial feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Pham not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Pham pulls Arial in close to prevent any damage.
Arial has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Arial's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Arial trying to control the position from guard on top but Pham is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pham seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Arial throws an elbow that misses. Pham uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Arial's guard. Nice move by Pham!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pham won't allow Arial to sweep him here.
Pham trying to control but Arial is working from the bottom.
Pham trying to stand up but can't free himself from Arial's guard.
Arial seems keen to control Pham's posture.
Arial has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Pham wants to stand and escape but instead Arial has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Pham looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Arial puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Pham has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Arial is working away from the top position though.
Arial looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Pham with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Arial is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Pham doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Arial.
Pham controlling the position for now.
Pham has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Arial is working away from the top position though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pham is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Arial throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Arial thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pham's head.
Arial throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Arial is looking to take a break and control but Pham is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Pham felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Arial not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Arial passes to full mount!
Arial lands a nice shot to the head.
Pham tries to hold on but Arial postures up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pham regains half guard.
Arial trying to control the action but Pham is working from the bottom.
Arial thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Pham is looking for a sweep. Arial is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Pham wants to control but Arial is keeping busy.
Pham is concentrating on defense, preventing Arial from advancing position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Arial misses with a head shot. Pham uses the momentum to regain guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Arial lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Arial working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Pham's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dex Arial dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Arial on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Arial shoots in and drives through. Pham sprawls well.
Duc Minh Pham seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Arial doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Pham cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Pham lands with a right hand.
Pham cracks Arial with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Pham throws a lazy right hand but Arial sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Pham throws a leg kick

and Arial counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Pham!
Pham bucks up and tries to throw Arial off but instead Arial has got his back!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Arial lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Arial has the hooks in. Pham is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Arial throwing wild punches that miss their target.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Arial scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.
Pham really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Arial. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Arial lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.

Arial is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Pham is defending well though. Arial let's go of the attempt for now.
Arial throwing sloppy strikes.
Pham wants to get back to his feet.

Pham is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Arial gets his way!

Pham is trying to control the position but Arial manages to sink in the RNC - Pham is forced to tap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:10 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Dex Arial!
Dex Arial decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
