Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Irwin Rodriguez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Andrei Lutoborov! The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Konstantin Menshow and Aleksandr Martynov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rodriguez wants to clinch up but Lutoborov keeps it at a distance. Lutoborov closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Lutoborov lands in his opponent's guard. Lutoborov stands up over Rodriguez, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Lutoborov controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Lutoborov's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Lutoborov must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Lutoborov is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Lutoborov's corner is telling him to maintain position. More stalling from Lutoborov. Lutoborov preventing the sweep. Lutoborov prevents Rodriguez from getting back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rodriguez trying to control the position.
Lutoborov engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Lutoborov won't allow Rodriguez to sweep him here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Lutoborov controlling from the top position. Lutoborov with more of the same as he continues to hold on. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Rodriguez is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Lutoborov is aware though and is defending well. Lutoborov prevents Rodriguez from getting back to his feet. Rodriguez can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Lutoborov controls the pace. It looks like Lutoborov might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Rodriguez really is a fat lump. Rodriguez gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Lutoborov to score an easy takedown into full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Lutoborov is in close to Rodriguez's body, working some short punches and elbows. Lutoborov connects with a couple of short punches. Rodriguez being controlled here, momentarily. Lutoborov loads up on a big left hand. Rodriguez felt that one! He's just covering up now, not defending himself intelligently - Lutoborov looks towards the ref and unloads with 3 more big shots and the ref has no choice but to stop the fight! Rodriguez can't hide his disappointment, as Lutoborov celebrates the victory.
