PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Philip McCoy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Math Barack (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Philip McCoy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Math Barack!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Edson Gomes and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Barack.
McCoy is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Barack off and has taken his back!

McCoy thows a huge left but connects with the canvas and not his opponent.

Barack defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of McCoy's arms.
Barack manages to reverse the position and now he's in McCoy's guard. Nice work there by Barack.

McCoy throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

McCoy working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Barack doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Barack manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
McCoy misses with some strikes from the bottom.
McCoy tries to get to full guard but Barack has control of the leg.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Barack in particular looking to stall.

McCoy is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Barack pulls his head out easily.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
McCoy tries to get to full guard but Barack has control of the leg.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Barack closes this distance looking for a takedown but McCoy circles away.
Barack should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

McCoy throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Barack looks gassed!

That was a close round but I would say that Philip McCoy will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Barack fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

McCoy has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Barack can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
McCoy is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Barack wants to control from the top but McCoy keeps moving.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
McCoy is looking to improve his position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
McCoy shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Barack counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

McCoy has his foot on Barack's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Barack works his way back into a safe position though.
Barack's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Barack avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

McCoy isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Barack stacks McCoy on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Barack!
McCoy throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.
McCoy is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
McCoy is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Barack asserts his dominance and retains side control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
McCoy sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
McCoy wants to get back to his feet.

McCoy manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Barack gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and McCoy counters with a single leg into guard. Barack didn't expect that.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Math Barack will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

McCoy is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Barack is pressing down on McCoy's thigh, looking to free his foot. McCoy is holding on for now.
McCoy is looking for a sweep. Barack is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

McCoy is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Barack pulls his head out easily.

McCoy landing rabbit punches to the side of Barack's head. Not doing much damage but still scoring a few points.

The fighters are battling for position here. McCoy manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

McCoy is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Barack tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
McCoy has Barack pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Barack manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

McCoy thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Barack's head.

McCoy throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Philip McCoy overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

McCoy is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

McCoy looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Barack with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Well McCoy has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
