PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between James Steel (ranked 1123 p4p, 150 weight class) and Angel Face (ranked 2722 p4p, 314 weight class). Face comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Tyga - Real Deal kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! James Steel has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 1, fighting out of New York, James Steel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 27 - 14 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Angel Face!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Alec Ball and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Steel tries to clinch but Face is having none of it.
Face scores with a jab. Steel acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Steel rushes Face and presses him up against the cage.
Steel drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Face gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Face has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Steel lands with a left to the head.
Face is looking to break free of the clinch but Steel has double underhooks.
A shot in the inside from Steel.

Steel lands a takedown into guard.
Steel is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Steel forces his way into half guard.
Steel seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Steel is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Face defends it well.

Steel is trying to control. Face wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Face has his hands clasped together around Steel's back. He's all about the action.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Face can do anything to dispel that myth.

Steel is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Steel is looking for a kimura here.
Steel is trying to control the action in half guard but Face is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Steel is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Face doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Steel.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Steel is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Steel is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Face doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Steel.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Steel looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Steel dominated that round.
That's time! Steel's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Steel fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
A jab from Face misses.
Steel drops down looking for a counter takedown but Face sprawls and moves away.
Face slips a straight right by Steel.
Face throws a counter combo.
Steel scores with a three punch combo!
Face thuds a left hand into Steel's body.
Steel misses with a few strikes there.
Steel uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Face.
Steel scores with a hook to the body. Face takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Steel lands with a right hand.
Face looks to land a combination but Steel avoids it well.
Steel throws a nice outside leg kick.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Steel bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Face's head.
Steel scores with a decent looking hook.
Steel shoots and misses
and Steel takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Steel lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Face circles away quickly and effectively.
Face throws a shot to the body.
Steel throws a body punch but Face moves out of range.
Face misses with a hook.
A counter left hand to the body from Steel misses its target.
Face misses with a looping left.
Steel connects with a body shot.
Steel scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Face throws a one two combo.
Steel throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Face let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.

Steel has Face up against the cage in a clinch.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Face is trying to break the clinch but Steel is controlling him.
Face is trying to force a seperation but Steel has the dominant position.
Steel wants a takedown but no success here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Steel. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Steel swings wildly with an uppercut but Face uses good head movement to avoid it.

Face blocks an uppercut.

Face escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Steel closes the distance but Face moves to the side
and Face counters with a series of strikes. Steel will be more careful next time no doubt.
Face will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Nice uppercut lands for Steel. That snapped Face's head back.
Face swats away the attempt to clinch by Steel.

Face looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Face walks into a left hand.
Steel seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
James Steel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Face thows a left - swing and a miss!
Steel connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.

Steel throws a right and a left that both miss.
Steel gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Face.
Steel scores with a nice head shot.
Steel throws a body shot but no joy.
Steel defending well as Face loads up on a big left hand.
A left lands for Face.
No luck for Steel with that takedown attempt.
Face swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Face fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Steel looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Steel tries to clinch but Face is having none of it.

Angel Face is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Steel gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Steel has Face pressed against the cage, preventing Face from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Steel is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Face can do to turn this around?

Face looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Steel keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Face's efforts to push away.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

James Steel is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Face felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Face really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Steel. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Face can't escape the position.
Steel content just to control the position here.
Steel seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Face for as long as he can get away with.
Angel Face has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
James Steel showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Steel, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
