Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Andrey Yakovenko! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Abdul Farooqi! The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Santiago Holmes and Winston Alpacca.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Farooqi gets a clinch. Yakovenko makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut. Yakovenko lands a shot to the body. Farooqi pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. No luck for Yakovenko with that takedown attempt. Farooqi fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Yakovenko lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick. Farooqi misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Farooqi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Yakovenko sprawls well. Yakovenko wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Farooqi gets slowly back to his feet. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Yakovenko stuffs the takedown attempt from Farooqi. Farooqi gets slowly back to his feet. As Farooqi looks to move away, Yakovenko throws a big counter combo but Farooqi just gets out of the way. Andrey Yakovenko has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Abdul Farooqi. Yakovenko fails with the takedown.
That's one minute gone in the round. Yakovenko fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. The fight moves into the clinch position. Yakovenko tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Farooqi just stands there and leans against the cage. Yakovenko jumps into guard, dragging Farooqi to the mat.
Farooqi throws a big right hand that misses. Farooqi is pushing down on Yakovenko's leg trying to pass to half guard. Yakovenko is fighting to maintain full guard but Farooqi has managed to sneak the leg through. Farooqi is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Yakovenko is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Abdul Farooqi!
