Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Henry Reyes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Valentin Gorlanov! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Gwen Towbar and Wesley Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gorlanov will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Valentin Gorlanov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Reyes lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt. Gorlanov closes this distance looking for a takedown but Reyes circles away. No luck with that takedown attempt from Gorlanov. Reyes changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Henry Reyes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Valentin Gorlanov. Reyes misses with a series of wild punches.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gorlanov. Gorlanov shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Gorlanov controls from within his opponent's guard. Reyes doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Gorlanov sitting in guard, not really doing much. Reyes has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gorlanov can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gorlanov controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Gorlanov bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Reyes is letting Gorlanov control him for a moment. Reyes looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Reyes is trying to control Gorlanov's posture but Gorlanov avoids it. Gorlanov controls the position. Gorlanov goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Reyes has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Gorlanov but great work by Reyes. Gorlanov tries to buck Reyes off but Reyes is having none of it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gorlanov sneaks back into half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gorlanov looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Gorlanov looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Gorlanov looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Gorlanov gets full guard. Gorlanov is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Reyes wants to pass the guard but Gorlanov is keeping the position. Gorlanov is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Reyes defends well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Reyes is looking to stand up but Gorlanov won't let him. Gorlanov is looking for a triangle but Reyes pushes his legs off easily.
Reyes with a nice head shot there. Gorlanov keeping moving, preventing Reyes from controlling successfully. Gorlanov looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Gorlanov working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Reyes. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Reyes throws a big elbow that misses. Gorlanov is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Gorlanov is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Reyes frees his head nicely. Oh but Gorlanov has switched to an armbar! Reyes is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
