Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Richard Gurd! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gregory Simmons! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Alexandre Firmino and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gurd forces Simmons back against the cage and clinches. A nice right hand lands inside from Gurd. Gurd lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage. Simmons gets control of Gurd's arms and successfully pulls guard. Simmons will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Simmons is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Simmons looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Simmons looking to sweep here. No luck so far. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gurd got a little sloppy there for a moment and Simmons has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Gurd has managed to get both his arms back between Simmons's legs - danger averted. Simmons wants to sweep here but Gurd controlling him for the moment. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Simmons can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's one minute gone in the round. Simmons escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gurd gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Gurd has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Simmons is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Gurd stops Simmons from standing up. Gurd trying to control the position from guard on top but Simmons is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Gurd is fighting to break Simmons's control of his arms but Simmons is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Gurd tries to clinch but Simmons moves out of range. Simmons steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Gurd. Gurd has taken the fight to the clinch.
A short left from Gurd. A short uppercut from Gurd. Simmons decides to pull guard. Simmons looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Gurd is defending well. Simmons quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Gurd has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Simmons celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
