PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gregory Graves (ranked 7715 p4p, 0 weight class) and Galgarin Wolkow (ranked 5865 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gregory Graves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Galgarin Wolkow!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Igor Prikhodko and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wolkow feints and as Graves raises his hands in defense, Wolkow changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Graves is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Graves lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Wolkow is adopting a defensive guard.
Graves will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Let's hope that Wolkow has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Wolkow keeping moving, preventing Graves from controlling successfully.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Wolkow is on top in guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Graves wants to stand up but Wolkow is controlling him.
Graves trying to keep a closed guard but Wolkow is proving a slippery customer.

Graves pushes Wolkow off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Wolkow gets the takedown into side control.
Graves tries to bench press Wolkow off him but Wolkow keeps the position.
Wolkow controls the position.
Graves is trying to get back to half guard.
Graves bucks up and tries to throw Wolkow off but instead Wolkow has got his back!

Wolkow has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
Graves manages to reverse the position and now he's in Wolkow's guard. Nice work there by Graves.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Wolkow is looking for a triangle but Graves pushes his legs off easily.
Graves has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Wolkow is proving hard to escape from.
Graves won't allow Wolkow to sweep him here.
Graves really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Wolkow has momentary wrist control but Graves slips an elbow through the middle.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Wolkow holds on and takes a little breather.
Wolkow's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Wolkow looking to hit a scissor sweep but Graves is one step ahead there.
Wolkow utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Graves is looking to stand up but Wolkow won't let him.
Graves trying to control the position from guard on top but Wolkow is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Wolkow is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Wolkow keeping moving, preventing Graves from controlling successfully.
Wolkow bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Graves's guard.

Wolkow seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Graves has his hands on Wolkow's head, controlling the position.
Wolkow tries to free his leg and advance position but Graves is retaining full guard.
Wolkow postures up.
Wolkow wants to control from the top but Graves keeps moving.

Wolkow gets to his feet. Graves looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Galgarin Wolkow dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



A momentary lapse in concentration from Graves enables Wolkow to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Graves manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Graves manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

Wolkow drags the fight down to the ground.
Wolkow is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Graves gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Graves displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Wolkow throws out the jab.
Graves thinks about countering with a head kick.
Graves lands with a kick to the temple. Wolkow shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

Wolkow scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Graves trying to control but Wolkow postures up.
Graves is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Wolkow's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Wolkow's back!
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.

Graves is hanging on to Wolkow's back as he tries to escape.
Wolkow tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Wolkow tries to hold on but Graves postures up.
Graves wants to control the pace but Wolkow is squirming around nicely.
Graves prevents Wolkow from getting the reversal.
Wolkow wants to control but Graves is having none of it.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Graves tries to control but Wolkow wriggling away.
Graves lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Wolkow hang on?
Graves throws a strike there. Wolkow manages to avoid it well and slips a leg under to get to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Graves throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Wolkow is not content to let Graves control the position.
Wolkow wants to get back to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Graves decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Wolkow.
Wolkow trying to control the position but Graves is working away.
Wolkow might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Graves haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Wolkow advances nicely into full mount.
Wolkow sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Galgarin Wolkow has got the better of the ground game so far.
Wolkow wants to control the pace but Graves is squirming around nicely.
Wolkow is breathing heavily.
Graves really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Graves swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Graves trying desperately to get to his feet.
Graves slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Wolkow wants to take a breather but Graves is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Gregory Graves will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. And we move into the final round!

Wolkow escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Graves gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Graves wants to stand but Wolkow has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Wolkow is trying to keep Graves in close.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Wolkow seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Graves lands a head kick. Wolkow smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Graves gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Wolkow to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Wolkow slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Graves wants to improve his position but instead Wolkow has moved into half guard.

Wolkow stops Graves from getting back to his feet.
Well, if Wolkow is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Graves is working hard here to advance position.
Wolkow passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Graves!
Wolkow controlling the position easily from mount.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Wolkow avoids the attempt from Graves to control.

And that's the end of the fight!
Galgarin Wolkow comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Wolkow has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
