PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Cody Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Trigg (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Trigg's choice of entrance music: Mama Said Knock You Out. Frank Trigg has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Cody Johnson's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cody Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Trigg!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Stewart Dunkirk and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Trigg changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Johnson tries to avoid it but Trigg manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Johnson to the ground. Johnson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Trigg drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Johnson is looking to regain half guard here but Trigg keeps moving and retains side control.
Trigg really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Johnson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Trigg lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Trigg advances to full mount.
Johnson is breathing heavily.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Johnson is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Trigg pulls his head out easily.

Johnson could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Trigg is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Johnson is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Trigg scores with a couple of nice shots.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Trigg lands with a punch from half guard.

Trigg stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Johnson to get to his feet.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Trigg.
Johnson is looking for a sweep.

Trigg wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Johnson, who protects the arm well.
Johnson tries to improve position but can't.
Johnson is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Trigg off and has taken his back!

Johnson is trying to stick to Trigg's back but Trigg is turning into Johnson. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Johnson's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Trigg.

Johnson is looking for a triangle but Trigg pushes his legs off easily.

Johnson has his foot on Trigg's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Trigg works his way back into a safe position though.

Trigg shoots in for a double leg but Johnson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Trigg takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Johnson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Johnson is wriggling around trying to escape.
Johnson is squirming around, avoiding Trigg's attempts to control the action.
Johnson tries to reverse the position but Trigg maintains control.

Trigg is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Johnson is surviving well by controlling Trigg's body position as best he can.

Trigg pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Johnson is desperately trying to improve his position but Trigg has a good base and remains in mount.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Trigg lands a nice shot to the head.
Johnson is wriggling around trying to escape.
Trigg lands with some strikes.

Trigg is working for a guillotine from mount but Johnson frees his head quite easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Johnson is not content to let Trigg control the position.

Trigg is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Johnson is just riding it out for now. Trigg eventually gives up the hold.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Trigg showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Trigg throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Johnson's waist but Johnson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Trigg off to one side.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Trigg tries a head kick but it misses.
Trigg misses with a takedown attempt - Johnson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Trigg closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Johnson is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Trigg is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Johnson sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Trigg is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Trigg looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Johnson with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Johnson is looking for a sweep. Trigg is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Trigg wants to stand but Johnson has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Trigg shoots in and bounces Johnson off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Cody Johnson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Trigg avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Johnson had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Trigg is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Johnson Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Trigg's back instead.

Johnson is looking for the choke from the back position but Trigg is controlling his hands well.
Frank Trigg is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
