Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Danny Greene! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Eric Van Der Woodsen! The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Stewart Dunkirk and Robert Twigg.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Van Der Woodsen dives in and scores a takedown into Greene's guard. Greene managing to control the position. Van Der Woodsen drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Greene dives on top into guard. Greene wants to stand but Van Der Woodsen is controlling his posture from full guard. Greene scoring with punches to the head and body. Van Der Woodsen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Van Der Woodsen is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Greene lands a couple of decent looking shots. Greene postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Van Der Woodsen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Greene gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Greene scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
That's one minute gone in the round. Van Der Woodsen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Greene defends it easily. Greene working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Van Der Woodsen tries to land a sweep but no joy. Greene is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Greene got a little sloppy there for a moment and Van Der Woodsen has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Greene has managed to get both his arms back between Van Der Woodsen's legs - danger averted. Greene with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Van Der Woodsen throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Greene escapes and throws Van Der Woodsen's legs to the side, diving into side control! Greene scoring with punches and elbows. Van Der Woodsen tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Greene wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Greene wants to control but Van Der Woodsen is keeping him busy. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Greene working the head and body with strikes. Greene creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Greene scores with punches from side control. Van Der Woodsen is working to avoid the ground and pound but Greene connects with a decent elbow. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Greene looks up at the clock and then as Van Der Woodsen takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Greene smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Greene scoring with punches and elbows. Greene scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Van Der Woodsen to see if he's OK.
Van Der Woodsen is rocked! Van Der Woodsen takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. Van Der Woodsen is still in real trouble! Can Greene finish him? Van Der Woodsen tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Greene wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Greene lands a strong strike to the head of Van Der Woodsen. That's dazed him! Greene looking to finish here. Van Der Woodsen is waving his arms around trying to block but he's hurt badly - Greene lands more strikes and the referee steps in to end the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Danny Greene! Danny Greene retains his lightweight title! Danny Greene seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
