Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jazz Clementine! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Daichi Kishimoto! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Ben Watson and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Clementine changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Kishimoto is defended easily by Clementine. Clementine has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Jazz Clementine seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Clementine misses with a hook. Kishimoto ducked under it nicely. Clementine cracks Kishimoto with a right hand to the side of the head. Clementine swings for the body but Kishimoto moves out of range.
Kishimoto changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt. Clementine moves into range and connects with a jab. Kishimoto walks into a stiff left hand from Clementine. Kishimoto walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Clementine fails to land with a series of punches.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Kishimoto! But no joy. Clementine slaps away a takedown attempt from Kishimoto, before circling back to the center of the mat. The crowd cheers as Clementine lands an impressive looking overhand right. Kishimoto doesn't seem phased though. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Kishimoto slips a jab from Clementine.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kishimoto shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Jazz Clementine has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. It's a sloppy attempt though and Kishimoto jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Kishimoto controlling from the top position. Clementine looking to control.
Kishimoto is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Clementine is adopting a defensive guard.
