Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ezra Johns! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Borys Mankowski! The judges for this bout are George Francis, Alan Glass and Daniel Franklin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mankowski ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Johns moves away. Mankowski will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Mankowski rushes Johns and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Johns pulls guard. Johns is trying to control the position but Mankowski postures up. Mankowski passes into half guard. Mankowski is figuring out what he wants to do next. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Johns tries to roll over but Mankowski keeps him under control. Mankowski is looking to advance position but Johns won't allow it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mankowski decides to stand up. Mankowski closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Mankowski wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Johns, who protects the arm well. Mankowski is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position. Johns is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Mankowski asserts his dominance and retains side control. An elbow from Mankowski crashes against the mat.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Johns is looking to regain half guard here but Mankowski keeps moving and retains side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mankowski stands up and we're back to a striking position. Mankowski fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Johns sprawls well initially but Mankowski persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Mankowski is controlling the pace.
Johns wants to control but Mankowski is keeping busy and won't allow it. Mankowski is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Mankowski stalling.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Johns trying to control here.
Mankowski stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Johns to get to his feet. Mankowski closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Johns's guard. Johns really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Mankowski passes Johns's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Johns tries to kick Mankowski off but Mankowski keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Mankowski perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Johns tries to roll over but Mankowski keeps him under control. Mankowski drops an elbow to the side of Johns's head. Mankowski wants to pass to mount but Johns is defending the position. Mankowski is taking a breather. Johns says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Mankowski thows a huge punch but Johns dodges it nicely.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Johns is trying to control but can't.
Mankowski wants to free his trapped foot but Johns is holding on for dear life with his legs. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Borys Mankowski dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
