PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hiro Manowaru (ranked 7368 p4p, 598 weight class) and Bruce Schlimen (ranked 4524 p4p, 458 weight class). Schlimen comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Wavey kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Hiro Manowaru has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hiro Manowaru!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bruce Schlimen!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Daniel Bishop and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Schlimen throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Manowaru tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Schlimen is in Manowaru's guard.

Schlimen thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Manowaru has Schlimen pulled in close to control his posture.
Schlimen trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Manowaru knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Schlimen on the ground.
Manowaru seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Manowaru's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Schlimen tries to keep at a distance but Manowaru has taken the fight into the clinch.

Manowaru has picked Schlimen up - he's going for a ride! Manowaru dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Manowaru in particular looking to stall.
Schlimen felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Manowaru throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Manowaru will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Well, if Manowaru is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The fighters are battling for position here. Schlimen manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Manowaru has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Manowaru has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Schlimen looking to hit a scissor sweep but Manowaru is one step ahead there.

Schlimen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Manowaru defends it easily.
Manowaru controls from within his opponent's guard.
Manowaru pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Schlimen is keeping the position for now.
Schlimen controls Manowaru momentarily but Manowaru frees himself.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Manowaru controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Manowaru avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Manowaru slips a straight right by Schlimen.
Manowaru attempts a counter takedown but Schlimen avoids it well and moves away.

Manowaru moves into the clinch.

Manowaru jumps into guard, dragging Schlimen to the mat.
Manowaru is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Further stalling from Manowaru.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Schlimen wants to control from the top but Manowaru keeps moving.
Manowaru has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hiro Manowaru dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Schlimen misses with an attempted mid kick.
Manowaru tries to counter by clinching up but Schlimen breaks away and moves out of range.
Schlimen throws a poor cross that misses
and Manowaru counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Manowaru looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Schlimen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Manowaru got a little sloppy there for a moment and Schlimen has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Manowaru has managed to get both his arms back between Schlimen's legs - danger averted.
Manowaru is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Schlimen can do to turn this around?

Schlimen is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Manowaru is aware though and is defending well.

Schlimen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Schlimen pushes a forearm under Manowaru's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Manowaru is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:27 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Bruce Schlimen!
Bruce Schlimen seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
