PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jerome Alviso (ranked 4406 p4p, 471 weight class) and Sampson Shain (ranked 5000 p4p, 520 weight class). Alviso comes to the cage accompanied by Pooh Man-Oakland. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jerome Alviso! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sampson Shain! The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Franklyn Lucas and David Schapiro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alviso looks for a takedown but Shain sprawls well. Shain lands a really nice looking cross but Alviso seems unphased.
Shain bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Alviso's head backwards. Alviso tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Shain counters with a good low kick that Alviso was not able to check. Shain pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Alviso throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Shain's waist but Shain gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Alviso off to one side. A little jabbing left from Shain on the counter but it doesn't find it's target. Shain lands an overhand right. Alviso shoots in but Shain avoids the takedown attempt easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jerome Alviso. That's going to take a lot out of him. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shain tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Alviso was well out of range. Poor timing from Shain. Shain is looking to slow Alviso down with leg kicks. Alviso shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Shain counters with a slapping leg kick. No luck with that takedown attempt from Alviso.
That's one minute gone in the round. Shain punishes Alviso's body with a nice straight punch. Alviso doesn't manage to clinch there - Shain circles away.

Alviso shoots in for a double leg but Shain sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. A decent looking cross lands there for Shain. Alviso on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Shain. Shain obviously looking to wear him down.
Alviso takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Alviso stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Shain. Sampson Shain is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Shain scores with a slapping inside leg kick. Jerome Alviso seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Shain lands a nice shot to the body.
Alviso fails with a takedown attempt. Shain gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. We've been hearing that Alviso has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Alviso postures up in Shain's guard and throws a big left but Shain blocks it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shain utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Alviso landing with the ground and pound. Alviso working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Alviso missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Alviso is looking to work some ground and pound but Shain has wrist control. Alviso throwing strikes but missing. Alviso is looking to work some ground and pound but Shain has wrist control. Shain preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Alviso trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Alviso trying to control the position from guard on top but Shain is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Alviso is really struggling to control Shain but he's trying to hold on to the position. Alviso throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Shain wants to stand and escape but Alviso is having none of it.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Shain takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Nice body kick there by Shain. Shain lands a nice shot to the body.
Shain lands with a nice body punch. Alviso throws a series of punches but Shain avoids them all with ease. Alviso throws a solid leg kick but Shain takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Alviso. A good leg kick by Shain.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Alviso shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Shain's guard. Shain keeping moving, preventing Alviso from controlling successfully. Shain looking to hit a scissor sweep but Alviso is one step ahead there. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Alviso throws a big right hand that misses. Alviso in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Alviso throws a big elbow that misses. Alviso is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Shain is pulling down on Alviso's head. It's preventing any offense from Alviso, at least for the moment. Shain trying to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Sampson Shain dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Shain stuffs the takedown attempt from Alviso. Alviso gets slowly back to his feet. A solid body kick from Shain. Shain lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Shain digs a good body shot into Alviso's ribs. Alviso with a poor takedown and Shain counters with a good low kick that Alviso was not able to check. Shain avoids the head kick by Alviso.
Alviso misses with a combination
and Shain counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Alviso falls off balance throwing a combination
and Shain counters with a thumping low kick. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shain fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Alviso shoots in looking for a takedown but Shain manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Alviso's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jerome Alviso. That's going to take a lot out of him. Alviso has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Alviso there as he acknowledges the shot. Shain with a body punch. A glancing blow. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. A head kick from Shain lands but Alviso takes it in his stride. Shain steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Alviso. Jerome Alviso is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
That's one minute gone in the round. Shain defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Alviso. Alviso looks to clinch and Shain counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body. Shain lands with an uppercut that bounces Alviso off the cage and back into range. Alviso changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Shain tries to avoid it but Alviso manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Shain to the ground. Shain escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Alviso with a poor takedown enabling Shain to counter with a crisp jab. Alviso moves in looking to clinch but Shain pushes him off. Shain fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Alviso has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Shain throws a head kick that misses. Alviso is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight. Alviso misses with a jab, cross combination.
Alviso has his takedown stuffed and Shain counters with a slapping leg kick. Shain throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body. Shain scores with a jab to the head.
A lazy left from Shain finds it's target. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Shain circles away from the clinch attempt and Shain counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Alviso tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Shain connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Alviso momentarily.
Shain paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button. Alviso shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Shain counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt. Shain throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Alviso is rocked! Alviso shoots for a takedown but Shain saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Oh Alviso is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Shain throws a monster overhand right that drops Alviso! Shain follows up with more strikes from mount and the fight is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:31 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Sampson Shain! In defeat, Jerome Alviso stepped up to the mic, saying 'My dad and brother are going to kick my ass again when I get home...'.
