Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Damien Joyner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Romero! The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Hirohito Nitta and Shirou Masuda.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Joyner bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Joyner definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Romero is looking for a sweep. You can see the frustration on Romero's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Romero tries to buck Joyner off but Joyner is having none of it. Joyner lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. Romero can't do much from the bottom here. Romero prevents Joyner from improving position. Romero sneaks back into half guard. Romero is trying to control but can't.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Joyner looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Joyner is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Joyner is nestled in close to Romero, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
That's one minute gone in the round. Romero moves into full guard.
Romero tries to land a sweep but no joy. Romero looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Joyner has picked Romero up and slammed him! Romero can't keep hold of the triangle and Joyner manages to pass to side control! Joyner working the body and head with strikes. Romero tries to improve position but can't. Romero should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Joyner cracks Romero with a big right hand but Romero just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Joyner in side control lands a decent elbow. Romero manages to get back to half guard. Joyner moves into full mount! Romero won't be happy about that! Joyner landing strikes from the mount. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Romero tries to hold on but Joyner postures up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Joyner lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Romero hang on? The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Romero is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Joyner in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Romero is working to get back to half guard.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Joyner scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Romero?

Joyner looking to control but Romero is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Joyner postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Romero looks a forlorn figure.

Romero is trying to control the position but Joyner postures up. Joyner pushing down on Romero's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Joyner seems to be looking for submissions.

Joyner keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Romero is looking for a sweep. Joyner is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Joyner looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Romero with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Romero taking some punishment here, with Joyner in his half guard. Joyner is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Romero defends it well. Joyner lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Romero wants to improve his position but Joyner is controlling well.

This is bad for Romero! Romero is desperately trying to improve his position but Joyner has a good base and remains in mount. Joyner lands a heavy elbow. Joyner lands a nice shot to the head. Joyner working Romero over with strikes here. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Romero is bucking up trying to escape but Joyner cracks him with another couple of good strikes. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Joyner cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Romero is rocked!
That's six minutes gone in the round. Joyner lands a big shot to the head and Romero winces in pain. He's tapped out due to strikes!
