Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Watin Qary! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Victor Kowalevitz! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Seu Braga and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kowalevitz. Qary gets the takedown into side control. Qary staying calm. Qary looks up at the clock and then as Kowalevitz takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Qary smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kowalevitz is looking to regain half guard here but Qary keeps moving and retains side control. Qary tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. You can see the frustration on Kowalevitz's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Qary knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kowalevitz on the ground.
That's one minute gone in the round. Qary remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Kowalevitz is trying to control Qary's posture but Qary avoids it. Kowalevitz manages to get back to half guard. Qary really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Qary controlling the pace. Qary wants to free his trapped foot but Kowalevitz is holding on for dear life with his legs. Kowalevitz trying to control from the bottom.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Qary stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Qary wants it to stay on the feet. Qary tries to land a front kick but Kowalevitz steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Qary displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Kowalevitz. Watin Qary has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Victor Kowalevitz. Kowalevitz will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Qary throws a series of punches but Kowalevitz avoids them all with ease. Qary shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Qary trying to control but Kowalevitz is working from the bottom. Qary throwing strikes but missing. Qary stops Kowalevitz from standing up. Kowalevitz had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Qary defends it easily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kowalevitz has a closed guard, preventing Qary from standing up. Qary got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kowalevitz has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Qary has managed to get both his arms back between Kowalevitz's legs - danger averted. Qary tries to free his leg and advance position but Kowalevitz is retaining full guard. Kowalevitz looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Qary is defending well. Kowalevitz quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Qary has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Kowalevitz celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
