PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Chongyang Lu (ranked 4441 p4p, 0 weight class) and Youssef Kassim (ranked 4417 p4p, 0 weight class). Youssef Kassim will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Chongyang Lu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Youssef Kassim!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Peter Branson and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lu tries to clinch there but Kassim circles away.
Kassim changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Kassim is trying to get back to half guard.
Kassim looks winded!
Kassim on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Lu controls the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lu cracks Kassim with an elbow. That is naaassty.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Lu wants to stand but Kassim has his arm trapped.

Lu thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Lu working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Kassim seems a little lost for a moment, as Lu dominates the positioning.
Lu's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kassim is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Lu has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Kassim is looking for a sweep.
Lu remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Lu tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Lu has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Lu has managed to clinch.

Kassim is trying to maintain a safe position but Lu gets an underhook and turns Kassim into the cage.
Kassim wants to break free but Lu has control.
Lu has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Kassim is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Lu tries to pull guard but Kassim forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Lu has hold of one of Kassim's legs. Kassim is fighting the takedown attempt but Lu gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lu slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Lu knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kassim on the ground.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chongyang Lu dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Lu pushes Kassim up against the cage in a clinch.
Lu tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Kassim tries to pull guard but Lu holds him up against the cage and eventually Kassim drops back down to his feet.

Lu goes for a takedown attempt but Kassim pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Kassim tries to bum rush Lu with a series of wild strikes but Lu uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Kassim is breathing heavily.

Lu closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kassim did well to prevent Lu getting side control.
Lu lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Kassim is trying to control but can't.
Lu is controlling the pace.
Lu lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Lu prevents Kassim from standing back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kassim won't allow Lu to pass to mount.
Lu looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Lu in particular looking to stall.
Lu wants to get back to his feet.
Lu is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Lu shoots in and gets a takedown into Kassim's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lu cracks Kassim with a solid left hand.
Lu with a nice head shot there.
Lu content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Lu works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Well, if Lu is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Lu seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Kassim for as long as he can get away with.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Lu lands a nice short elbow.

Lu is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Lu perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Lu seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

If it seems like I'm not saying a lot, it's just because Lu is stinking the place up with his stalling.
Lu is nestled in close to Kassim, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Lu stops Kassim from getting back to his feet.
Lu is figuring out what he wants to do next.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Lu drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Lu trying to stand up but can't free himself from Kassim's guard.

Lu not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Lu decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Lu fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Kassim sprawls well initially but Lu persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Lu looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Chongyang Lu overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Chongyang Lu showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Lu, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
