PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Bryon Davis (ranked 6365 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hypnos Somnus (ranked 5944 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hypnos Somnus!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Somnus throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Davis decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Somnus's guard.
Somnus is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Davis with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Somnus is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Davis defends well.

Davis drops back, looking for a kneebar! Somnus looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Somnus looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Somnus!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Davis is in a bad spot here and he knows it... just holding on for now.
Somnus staying calm.

Somnus tries to score with some ground and pound. Davis controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Somnus tries to advance to mount but Davis denies him.
Somnus working away.
Davis is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Davis is looking to improve his position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Somnus missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Somnus seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Somnus takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Somnus is working for a kimura but Davis is defending it quite comfortably.
Somnus throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Davis tries to get to full guard but Somnus has control of the leg.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
A punch combination from Somnus misses.
Somnus rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Davis moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Davis changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Somnus is trying hard to land a takedown here. Davis sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Davis shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Somnus counters by moving into the clinch.
Davis tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Somnus smiles and moves away.
Somnus shoots in looking for a takedown but Davis manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Somnus's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Somnus misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Davis doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Somnus counters by clinching up.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bryon Davis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Davis doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Davis jumps guard but Somnus stands there with Davis around his waist. Davis gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Somnus has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Davis is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Somnus stalling.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Somnus will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Davis up against the cage.
Somnus keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Davis's efforts to push away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hypnos Somnus dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Davis tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Somnus paws at him with a jab and circles away.
And Somnus responds with a good body kick, but Davis manages to step out the way in time.
Davis darts in looking for a takedown but Somnus gets double underhooks and turns Davis into the cage.
A shot to the body from Somnus misses
and Davis counters with a left to the body.

and Somnus holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Somnus breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Somnus closes this distance looking for a takedown but Davis circles away.
It looked like Davis was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Somnus.
Davis stuffs the takedown.

Davis scores with a takedown into Somnus's guard.

Somnus kicks Davis off and gets to his feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Davis tries to clinch up but Somnus circles away and keeps his distance.

Davis moves out of range of the body kick.
Somnus misses with a low kick.
Somnus misses with a takedown attempt

and Davis holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Davis wants to get back to striking at distance but Somnus won't allow it.
Somnus tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Davis really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Somnus is trying to pull guard but Davis turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Somnus manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Somnus jumps guard but Davis turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Somnus is breathing heavily.

Somnus fails in his attempt to clinch.
Somnus dives in for a single leg takedown but Davis sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Davis fails to land the takedown.

Somnus tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Davis fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Somnus falls off balance throwing a combination

and Davis counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Somnus pulls Davis into guard.
Davis wants to control from the top but Somnus keeps moving.
Somnus is pulling down on Davis's head. It's preventing any offense from Davis, at least for the moment.
Somnus preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Davis stays in close to Somnus's body and controls the position.

Somnus pushes Davis off and scrambles back to his feet.
Somnus getting the better of the striking in that exchange.

Somnus moves into the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Somnus gets control of Davis's arms and successfully pulls guard. Somnus will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Somnus has Davis pulled in close to control his posture.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hypnos Somnus showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Davis distracts Somnus with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Davis loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Somnus throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Somnus avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Davis gets to his feet - Somnus follows without any prompting.
Davis fails to land the takedown.

Davis forces Somnus back against the cage and clinches.

Davis manages to break the clinch.

No luck for Somnus with that takedown attempt.

Davis goes for a double leg but Somnus avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Somnus continues to drive forward.

Somnus shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Davis eats them both and turns towards Somnus to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Davis is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Somnus shoots in and drives through. Davis sprawls well.
Somnus shoots in looking for a takedown but Davis manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Somnus's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Somnus shoots in for a takedown but Davis shows good takedown defense.
Somnus leaves Davis with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Davis shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Somnus pinned against the cage. Somnus gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

And that's the end of the fight!
Bryon Davis showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Somnus has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
