Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, David McDonald! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Simon Epstien! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Leandro Rodrigues and Mauricio Rocha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A slow jab from McDonald misses its intended target. Epstien shoots in but McDonald avoids the takedown attempt easily. Epstien misses with a head kick.
Epstien takes the fight into the clinch. Epstien drops to a knee looking for a takedown but McDonald gets the underhooks and prevents it.
McDonald tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. McDonald breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Epstien tries a head kick but it misses.
Epstien has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Epstien looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. McDonald tries to counter with a takedown but Epstien is quick to defend against it. David McDonald has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Simon Epstien.
That's one minute gone in the round. McDonald displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Epstien. McDonald rushes Epstien and presses him up against the cage. McDonald has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. McDonald manages to break the clinch.
McDonald misses with a body shot.
McDonald shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Epstien has momentary wrist control but McDonald slips an elbow through the middle. Epstien is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. McDonald content to stall in guard here. Epstien wants to stand up but McDonald is controlling him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. McDonald slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Epstien takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. Epstien is looking for a sweep. McDonald is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Epstien will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already. McDonald thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Epstien struggling a bit here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. McDonald has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Epstien is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. McDonald yanks on the arm and Epstien is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by McDonald.
