The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rivera fails to land with a series of punches.
Villarreal tries to counter with a takedown but Rivera is quick to defend against it.

Rivera throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Villarreal was covering up waiting for the punch and Rivera finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Rivera is fighting to break Villarreal's control of his arms but Villarreal is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Villarreal continues to stall.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Villarreal really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Rivera looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Villarreal pulls Rivera in close to prevent any damage.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Rivera closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Villarreal quickly recovers to half guard.

Villarreal has one foot on Rivera's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Villarreal scores with a one two! Rivera had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Villarreal closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Rivera did well to prevent Villarreal getting side control.
