PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Alex Mercer (ranked 4213 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bobby Tupper (ranked 5516 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Alex Mercer has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Alex Mercer seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 24 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Alex Mercer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 26 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Bobby Tupper!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Trevor Gratis and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mercer connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Tupper momentarily.

Tupper instigates a clinch.
Mercer tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Mercer tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Mercer pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Tupper throws a nice looking combination but Mercer bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Tupper misses with a head kick.
A head kick misses from Tupper.
Mercer half committed to a counter leg kick.
Tupper moves in looking to clinch but Mercer pushes him off.
Mercer darts in and out, connecting with a jab.

Mercer shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Tupper's guard.

Tupper manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
Mercer has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
A nice left hand lands by Mercer.
Tupper avoiding damage.

Mercer manages to break the clinch.
Tupper fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Mercer feints a jab promting Tupper to slip. Mercer then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Tupper slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Mercer slips a jab and a cross from Tupper.
Tupper misses with a series of wild punches.

Mercer scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Donk. Mercer catches Tupper right on the button with a cross.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Mercer tries to clinch up.
Tupper fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Mercer tries to clinch up but Tupper circles away and keeps his distance.
Mercer changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Tupper tries to avoid it but Mercer manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Tupper to the ground. Tupper escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Mercer digs a good hook to Tupper's body.
Mercer tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Tupper throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Mercer ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Mercer lands with a slapping head kick.

Tupper gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Mercer to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Tupper manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Mercer breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Mercer throws a shot to the body.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Mercer scores with a takedown into Tupper's guard.
Mercer is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Tupper wants to get back to his feet but Mercer is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Tupper is working an open guard so Mercer takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Tupper throws a sloppy head kick and Mercer moves out of range easily.
Mercer blocks a head kick by Tupper.
Mercer dives in for a single leg takedown but Tupper sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Mercer throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Tupper tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Mercer is in Tupper's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mercer slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Mercer has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Mercer advances to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Tupper manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Mercer keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Mercer lands a body shot.
Tupper prevents a takedown attempt there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alex Mercer. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mercer pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Mercer moves out of range as Tupper strikes.
Mercer went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Mercer scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Tupper misses with a series of wild punches.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Mercer bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Tupper's head backwards.
Mercer looks to score with a jab to the body but Tupper is just out of range.
Tupper throws a hook to the side of Mercer's head but Mercer sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Mercer was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Tupper takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Alex Mercer will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Mercer slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Tupper misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Mercer counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Mercer dips to his left and cracks Tupper with an uppercut!
Mercer scores with a hook to the body. Tupper takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Tupper drops his hands momentarily and Mercer takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Tupper looks to throw the jab but Mercer is out of range.
Mercer slips a jab and a cross from Tupper.
Tupper misses with a few strikes there.
Tupper throws a series of punches but Mercer avoids them all with ease.

Mercer rushes Tupper and presses him up against the cage.

Mercer breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Tupper tries to close the distance and clinch but Mercer swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Tupper misses with a wild combination.
Tupper shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Alex Mercer is winning the standup battle so far.
Mercer fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Tupper keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mercer lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Tupper tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Mercer is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Tupper is trying to push Mercer away but Mercer has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Mercer pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Tupper misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Bobby Tupper is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Tupper has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Mercer finds it's way round the side to connect with Tupper's head.
Mercer moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.


Tupper is rocked!
Mercer lands with a massive overhand right! Stick a fork in Tupper - he's out cold! Ermm... I think I just mixed my metaphors but yeah... That was a nice KO! Big win for Mercer!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:37 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Alex Mercer!
