PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joey Hatton (ranked 1511 p4p, 190 weight class) and Ciro Di Marzio (ranked 1313 p4p, 161 weight class). Hatton comes into the arena with deadman blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joey Hatton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ciro Di Marzio!
The judges for this bout are Chris Dean, John Mangel and Ben Hemmingworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

and Hatton counters with a single leg into guard. Marzio didn't expect that.
Marzio is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Hatton slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Hatton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Marzio swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hatton lands a nice hook to Marzio's body. Marzio takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Hatton uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Marzio.
Hatton looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

and Hatton holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Hatton is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Hatton changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Joey Hatton will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Marzio moves forwards but Hatton connects with a nice, crisp jab.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joey Hatton. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Marzio pushes Hatton back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Marzio creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Hatton has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Marzio can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Hatton changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Marzio tries to avoid it but Hatton manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Marzio to the ground. Marzio escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Ciro Di Marzio showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Hatton shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Hatton was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Marzio felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Hatton bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Marzio's guard.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Joey Hatton.
I think Hatton has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
