PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between JB Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Costas Kempmen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stevens has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Costas Kempmen has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Costas Kempmen!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kempmen shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Stevens trying to control but Kempmen postures up.
Kempmen looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Stevens has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kempmen is working away from the top position though.
Kempmen works his way into full mount!
Stevens is breathing heavily.
Stevens swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Stevens is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Kempmen looking to finish Stevens with some ground and pound. This is bad for Stevens!
Stevens is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Kempmen trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Kempmen landing strikes from the mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kempmen is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!

Stevens tries to keep at a distance but Kempmen has taken the fight into the clinch.
The is referee keeping an eye on Kempmen - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Kempmen breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Kempmen tries to close the distance and clinch up but Stevens swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Kempmen darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Stevens is trying to control but can't.
Well, if Kempmen is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Kempmen wants to take a breather but Stevens is having none of it.
Stevens missing with punches from the bottom.
Kempmen wants to control but Stevens is keeping him busy.

Kempmen is working for a submission of some sort.

Stevens is trying to stand.
Kempmen passes into side control, despite Stevens's attempt to control the position.
Kempmen working the head with strikes.

Kempmen has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Stevens shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Kempmen listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Kempmen tries to close the distance and clinch but Stevens swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kempmen bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.

Stevens tries to keep at a distance but Kempmen has taken the fight into the clinch.

Kempmen is trying to trip Stevens. He has hold of a leg but Stevens is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Kempmen persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Stevens is working an open guard so Kempmen takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Nice cross by Kempmen.
Kempmen is looking to clinch but Stevens is avoiding it.

Kempmen closes the distance and pushes Stevens back into the cage.
With the fighters up against the cage, Stevens throws an elbow but misses.

Kempmen tightens his grip and picks Stevens up, before dumping him to the ground. Stevens manages to land in guard.
Stevens looking to control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Stevens looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kempmen is one step ahead there.
Kempmen is working Stevens over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Costas Kempmen dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Kempmen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
A lull in the action here.

Kempmen decides to stand back up. Kempmen steps back and let's Stevens get back to his feet.

Kempmen looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Stevens!
Stevens tries to hold on but Kempmen postures up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Stevens is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
Stevens is wriggling around trying to escape.

Kempmen lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Stevens hang on?
You get the feeling that Stevens really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Stevens wants to hold on but Kempmen pushes him away.
Stevens throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.

Kempmen looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Stevens tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Kempmen stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Costas Kempmen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Stevens takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Kempmen lands a jab to the head.
Stevens misses with a takedown attempt

and Kempmen counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Stevens wants to control but Kempmen is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Kempmen tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

Stevens is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Kempmen pulls his head out easily.

Kempmen trying to pass the guard but Stevens defending well.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Stevens looks to throw a body kick

and Kempmen counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Stevens working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kempmen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kempmen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Stevens bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kempmen's guard.
Kempmen keeping moving, preventing Stevens from controlling successfully.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kempmen is on top in guard.
Costas Kempmen has got the better of the ground game so far.

Kempmen gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Stevens gets caught flat footed, as Kempmen shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Kempmen gets to his feet. Stevens looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Costas Kempmen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Kempmen throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Kempmen wants to clinch.

Kempmen drives through and clinches with Stevens against the cage.
Kempmen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Kempmen breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Kempmen drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Kempmen trying to control the position from guard on top but Stevens is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Stevens wants to sweep here but Kempmen controlling him for the moment.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kempmen throwing strikes but missing.
Kempmen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stevens swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kempmen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Stevens. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Stevens controlling Kempmen's posture.

Stevens has his foot on Kempmen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kempmen works his way back into a safe position though.
Kempmen works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Stevens is trying to get back to full guard.
Stevens is trying to control but can't.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Kempmen gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Kempmen tries to clinch up.
Stevens throws a head kick that misses
and Kempmen counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Stevens misses with a two punch combination.

Kempmen decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Kempmen wants to free his trapped foot but Stevens is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Kempmen trying to pass the guard but Stevens defending well.
Stevens wants to improve his position but Kempmen is controlling well.

Kempmen is looking for a kimura here.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Stevens keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Kempmen has Stevens up against the cage in a clinch.
Stevens has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Kempmen is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Kempmen breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Kempmen lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Stevens lands with a thumping leg kick.
Stevens misses with a takedown attempt - Kempmen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Kempmen darts in and clinches Stevens up against the cage.
JB Stevens has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Costas Kempmen is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Kempmen lands a hook to the side of the head.

Kempmen's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

And that's the end of the fight!
Costas Kempmen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kempmen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
