Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Connor Joieson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Gary Dema! The judges for this bout are Topper Green, Bruno Hogan and Francis DeMontford.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Dema moves into the clinch successfully.
Dema is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage. Joieson pulls guard. Joieson will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Joieson managing to control the position. Joieson is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Joieson seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission. Joieson being controlled here, momentarily. Joieson lands an upkick as Dema stands over him. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Joieson utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Dema has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Joieson tries to land a sweep but no joy. Joieson is working hard here to advance position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Dema is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Joieson is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Joieson has escaped and now he's on top! Dema controls Joieson momentarily but Joieson frees himself. Dema is looking for a triangle but Joieson pushes his legs off easily.
Joieson working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Joieson is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Dema has momentary wrist control but Joieson slips an elbow through the middle. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Joieson loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Dema throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Joieson working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Joieson working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Dema's head. Dema escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Joieson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Joieson distracts Dema with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Joieson is fighting to break Dema's control of his arms but Dema is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Joieson is working Dema over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Joieson landing some decent shots from guard. Joieson works over Dema with some ground and pound from guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Joieson scoring with some ground and pound. Dema looking for a triangle here. Joieson is fighting it but it looks tight! Dema pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Joieson is tapping out - this one is all over!
