Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Joshua Brawner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rico Armbar! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, David Hoff and Winston Alpacca.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Brawner scores with a nice strike. Brawner shoots in and bounces Armbar off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Armbar has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Brawner has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage. Armbar tries to break the clinch but Brawner is controlling the position. Brawner pulls guard effortlessly. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Armbar accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Brawner is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Armbar is aware though and is defending well. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Armbar trying to control the position from guard on top but Brawner is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Armbar passes easily into side control. Nice work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Brawner isn't going anywhere. Check out the look on Armbar's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Armbar is working Brawner over with some ground and pound from side control. You can see the frustration on Brawner's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Brawner regains half guard. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Armbar lands a nice short elbow. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Brawner has hold of Armbar's hands but Armbar slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Brawner is staying active underneath Armbar, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Armbar tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Armbar trying to control the action but Brawner is working from the bottom. Brawner is controlling Armbar's position as best he can from this difficult position. Brawner might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Armbar content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Brawner controlling the leg, holding on to half guard. Armbar not landing any meaningful shots this time.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Armbar is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Brawner is just riding it out for now. Armbar eventually gives up the hold. Armbar tries to pass the half guard into mount. Brawner knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Brawner on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Armbar wants to stand up but Brawner manages to regain full guard. Armbar got a little sloppy there for a moment and Brawner has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Armbar has managed to get both his arms back between Brawner's legs - danger averted. Brawner is breathing heavily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Armbar scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Armbar postures up.
Armbar landing with the ground and pound. Armbar sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Brawner's guard. Armbar scoring with strikes to the body and head. Armbar wants to free his trapped foot but Brawner is holding on for dear life with his legs. Armbar wants to take a breather but Brawner is having none of it. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Brawner is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rico Armbar dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Armbar gets a takedown into half guard. Brawner wants to control but Armbar is keeping busy and won't allow it. Armbar seems to be working for a kimura but Brawner defends the submission attempt. Brawner is looking for a sweep. Armbar is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Armbar perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Armbar is nestled in close to Brawner, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Armbar missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Brawner moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Armbar wanted to stand there but Brawner had control of the position. Armbar looking to pass the guard. Armbar cracks Brawner with a solid left hand. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Brawner keeping moving, preventing Armbar from controlling successfully.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Armbar being controlled here momentarily.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Brawner looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Armbar! Armbar bucks up and tries to throw Brawner off but instead Brawner has got his back! Armbar trying to control the hands but Brawner breaks the grip.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Brawner gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes. You can see the frustration on Armbar's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Armbar is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Brawner has the hooks in. Armbar is starting to panic. He's trying to push off one of the legs but he's left his neck open to attack. Brawner passes his arm under Armbar's neck and tightens up a rear naked choke! This one is surely all over! Yes, Armbar taps!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Joshua Brawner!
