PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Doyle Lyons (ranked 5843 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shinji Koji (ranked 7547 p4p, 0 weight class). Shinji Koji is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Doyle Lyons!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shinji Koji!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Hirohito Nitta and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Koji has taken the fight to the clinch.

Koji turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Koji manages to end up in side control.

Koji decides to stand back up.
Koji fails with the takedown.
Lyons feinted with a counter takedown.
Koji throws a sloppy head kick
and Lyons counters with a three punch combo that has Koji backing up. Koji nods at Lyons to acknowledge the strikes.
Koji shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Lyons pinned against the cage. Lyons gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Lyons half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Koji circles away from the clinch attempt.
Koji tries to score a power double leg takedown but Lyons sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Koji somewhat.
Doyle Lyons has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shinji Koji.

Koji misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Lyons went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Koji fails in his attempt to clinch.

Lyons clinches with his opponent.
Koji wants to stall.
A head punch on the inside from Koji fails to land.
Lyons tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Koji smiles and moves away.
Lyons defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Koji.
Lyons seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Koji.
Lyons throws a big counter combination but Koji scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Koji closes this distance looking for a takedown but Lyons circles away.
Doyle Lyons is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Koji goes for a double leg but Lyons avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Lyons continues to drive forward.
Lyons is looking for a counter combo.
Koji looks winded!

Lyons darts in and clinches Koji up against the cage.
Koji takes a shot to the head.
Koji is looking for a takedown.
Lyons jumps guard but Koji turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Koji has had enough of the clinch but Lyons keeps him there for the moment.
Still in the clinch, Lyons scores with a nice short uppercut.
Lyons lands a left hand.
Koji is trying to stall.
Koji is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Koji is trying to trip Lyons. He has hold of a leg but Lyons is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Koji persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Lyons is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Koji defends well.

Lyons looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Lyons is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Koji is aware though and is defending well.
Lyons keeping moving, preventing Koji from controlling successfully.

Koji avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Koji seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Lyons working for a triangle but Koji defends it easily.
Koji is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Lyons is looking for a triangle but Koji pushes his legs off easily.

Lyons is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Koji dives into side control.
Lyons is not content to let Koji control the position.
Koji remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Lyons is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Koji shoots in looking for a takedown. Lyons tries to sprawl out of it but Koji keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Lyons manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Horrible takedown attempt by Koji or perhaps it was just good defense by Lyons, which made it look bad.
Koji misses with a takedown attempt - Lyons sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Doyle Lyons has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shinji Koji.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lyons tries to close the distance and clinch but Koji swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Koji shoots for a double leg takedown but Lyons sprawls well. He's pushed Koji's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Koji is breathing heavily.

Lyons gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Lyons has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Koji avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Lyons tries to pull guard but Koji holds him up against the cage and eventually Lyons drops back down to his feet.
Koji landing some nice looking knees to the body.

Koji breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Koji moves into range and clinches up with Lyons.
Lyons fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Koji blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Lyons escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Koji tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Lyons is able to avoid easily.
It looked like Lyons was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Lyons is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Koji can do to turn this around?

Koji gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Lyons's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Koji throws a head kick but Lyons moves out of range.
Lyons seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.

Lyons escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Koji shoots in but no luck this time.
Koji tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Lyons moves into range and clinches up with Koji.
Lyons pushes off an throws an elbow but Koji leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Koji tries to pull guard but Lyons forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A head punch on the inside from Lyons fails to land.

Lyons pulls guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Koji postures up and lands a big shot to Lyons's brow.
Lyons doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Doyle Lyons dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Lyons has an active guard here but Koji has managed to pass into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lyons throws a sloppy strike from the bottom. He's now off balance and Koji manages to pass to side control.
Koji takes a little break here. Lyons wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Lyons manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Koji is trying to control but can't.
Lyons drops an elbow to the side of Koji's head.
Lyons will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Koji takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Lyons is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

Koji is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Lyons scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Lyons really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Koji wants to sweep here but Lyons controlling him for the moment.

Lyons is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Koji is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Lyons throws a big right hand that misses.

Koji working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lyons doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lyons manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Lyons is looking to clinch but Koji is avoiding it.
Doyle Lyons is winning the standup battle so far.
Koji shoots in for a takedown but Lyons shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Koji looks for a takedown but Lyons sprawls well.

Lyons gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Shinji Koji has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Doyle Lyons is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Lyons, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
