Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Connor Jenkins! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rei Spears! The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Peter Branson and Sandra Marshall.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jenkins with a poor takedown and Spears counters with a lovely straight right hand! Spears looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Jenkins fails with the takedown and Spears counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Spears throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Jenkins shoots and misses and Spears counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Connor Jenkins. That's going to take a lot out of him. Spears jabs Jenkins to the body, keeping him at a distance. Spears throws a shot from downtown. Jenkins moves away and avoids it. Jenkins appears to be looking for a big counter. Spears connects with a body shot. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Spears lands a jab to the head.
Jenkins fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Spears manages to avoid it. Spears throws a series of punches but Jenkins moves out of range. Jenkins fails with the takedown and Spears counters with a one-two to the body.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jenkins darts in trying to clinch and Spears counters with a stiff right hand. Jenkins shoots in and drives through. Spears sprawls well. We've been informed that Spears has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result. Spears defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Jenkins. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Spears! But no joy. Jenkins dives in and grabs Spears's left leg, looking for a takedown. Spears pushes down on Jenkins's head and hops out. Spears looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. Connor Jenkins seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Jenkins doesn't succeed with the takedown letting Spears counter with a right hand. Spears uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Jenkins has time to react. No luck with that takedown attempt from Jenkins. Rei Spears is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jenkins feints and as Spears raises his hands in defense, Jenkins changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Jenkins stopping the sweep attempt from Spears. Jenkins trying to control but Spears is working from the bottom. Spears really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jenkins. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Jenkins pushing down on Spears's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Jenkins tries to pass to full mount but Spears defends it. Spears is doing well to control the position and prevent Jenkins from advancing to side control. Jenkins is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Spears has managed to free his arm - good work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Spears wants to improve his position but Jenkins is controlling well.
Spears is trying to maintain the position but Jenkins is very close to passing his half guard. Jenkins seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Spears does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Jenkins stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being. Jenkins gets the takedown into side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Jenkins trying to control the position but Spears is working away. Jenkins working away. Spears is not content to let Jenkins control the position. Jenkins has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand. Spears is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range. Jenkins looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Spears is fending him off so far but Jenkins persists. Nope, Spears circles away and we're back to standing. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rei Spears dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Jenkins gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Spears tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Spears lands a left hand.
Jenkins takes a shot to the head. Jenkins tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Spears lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage. Spears scores with a shot to the side of Jenkins's head.
Jenkins is rocked! Spears throws a punch but it's blocked by Jenkins. Oh Jenkins is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Spears throws a head punch that misses. Spears fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Jenkins seems to have got his legs back now. Jenkins misses with a punch to the body.
Spears misses with some punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jenkins is trying to drag Spears to the mat but Spears just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Spears lands with a good tight uppercut to the head. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Spears misses with some punches.
That's one minute gone in the round. Spears swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Jenkins ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Jenkins no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Jenkins is looking to cinch up a triangle. Spears throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Jenkins's body to avoid the submission. Jenkins has instead reached around Spears's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Jenkins arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:27 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Connor Jenkins!
