PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jiu Jitsu (ranked 1822 p4p, 267 weight class) and Shape Shifter (ranked 2010 p4p, 61 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 22 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jiu Jitsu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 17 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shape Shifter!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Gregory Folan and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jitsu tries to keep at a distance but Shifter has taken the fight into the clinch.
Shifter lands a knee to the head.


It looks like Jiu Jitsu has been cut.
Jitsu is trying to pull guard but Shifter has him pressed against the cage.
Shifter using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Jitsu has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Jitsu pulls guard effortlessly.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Jitsu bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shifter's guard.

Jitsu is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

We've been hearing good reports from Jitsu's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shifter working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jitsu doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jitsu manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Shifter thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Jitsu got a little sloppy there for a moment and Shifter has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Jitsu has managed to get both his arms back between Shifter's legs - danger averted.
Shifter seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jitsu passes easily into side control. Nice work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Shifter wants to control but Jitsu postures up.

Jitsu is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Shifter has escaped the position, nice work there.
Jitsu wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shifter keeps working.
Jitsu remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Shifter wants to control but Jitsu postures up.
Jitsu is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Shifter will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Jitsu wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shifter keeps working.

Jitsu tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Jitsu has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Shifter is trying to control Jitsu's posture but Jitsu avoids it.
Shifter tries to bench press Jitsu off him but Jitsu keeps the position.
Shifter manages to work his way to half guard, despite Jitsu's best efforts.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shifter is looking to control Jitsu's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Shifter avoid being mounted?
Shifter felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Jitsu in particular looking to stall.
Jitsu's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jiu Jitsu will probably get the nod.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Shifter tries to land a knee to the head but Jitsu blocks with his arms.
Jitsu is looking for a takedown.
Jitsu is trying to pull guard but Shifter turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Jitsu is looking to take this one to the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jiu Jitsu. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Shifter tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jitsu has Shifter pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Shifter manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Shifter escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Jitsu feints and as Shifter raises his hands in defense, Jitsu changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Shifter has his foot on Jitsu's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Jitsu works his way back into a safe position though.
Shifter lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Jitsu is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Shifter seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Jitsu does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Jitsu is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shape Shifter showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Shifter closes the distance and clinches.
Jitsu has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Shifter is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Jitsu has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Shifter after a bit of a struggle.

Jitsu tries to free his leg and advance position but Shifter is retaining full guard.
Shifter tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Jiu Jitsu overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Jitsu is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Shifter defends it well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Shifter gets tackled into the cage by Jitsu. Jitsu maintains the clinch.

Shifter has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Jitsu is trying to keep an underhook but Shifter manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Jitsu wants to control but Shifter is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Shifter wants to lay and pray for a moment but Jitsu keeps working.

Jitsu is in a horrible position here. Shifter smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Shifter has control of Jitsu's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Jitsu regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Jitsu is working to get back to half guard.
Jitsu is squirming around, avoiding Shifter's attempts to control the action.

And that's the end of the fight!
Shape Shifter comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Shifter has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
