PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Roger Jones (ranked 4188 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bbequenbawer Alvarez (ranked 25314 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Roger Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 8 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Bbequenbawer Alvarez!
The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, David Hoff and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones is trying hard to land a takedown here. Alvarez sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Alvarez is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.

Jones has managed to clinch.
Jones tries a knee to the head but Alvarez blocks it.

Jones breaks from the clinch.
Jones misses with a takedown attempt
and Alvarez counters with a series of strikes. Jones will be more careful next time no doubt.
Alvarez shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Jones sprawls well. Jones wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Alvarez gets slowly back to his feet.
Jones lands with a straight right. Alvarez didn't see that one coming.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones has closed the distance and engaged Alvarez in a clinch.
Alvarez is trying to drag Jones to the mat but Jones just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.

A left hand lands to the body for Jones.
Alvarez wants a takedown.
Roger Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bbequenbawer Alvarez.
A frustrated look appears on Alvarez's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Alvarez stalling in the clinch but Jones improves position.

Jones jumps guard and drags Alvarez to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Jones is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Alvarez tries to free his leg and advance position but Jones is retaining full guard.

Alvarez controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Jones throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Alvarez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Alvarez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Alvarez is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Jones misses with a two punch combination.
Jones misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Jones really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Jones fails with the takedown.
Alvarez changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Jones misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Alvarez tries to close the distance and clinch up but Jones swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Alvarez gets tackled into the cage by Jones. Jones maintains the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Jones takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Alvarez wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Jones has him pressed against the cage.
Alvarez tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Alvarez pulls Jones into guard.
Alvarez keeping full guard, as Jones tries to pass.
Jones wants to control from the top but Alvarez keeps moving.
Jones will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Alvarez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jones can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Jones looking to sit in guard and control but Alvarez gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Jones looking for a guillotine here but Alvarez defends easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Alvarez forces his way into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Roger Jones dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Alvarez tries to clinch but Jones is having none of it.

Alvarez gets tackled into the cage by Jones. Jones maintains the clinch.
Alvarez is working for takedown but Jones is calmly controlling the position for now.

Jones is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Alvarez can't fight it off and eventually Jones manages to take the fight to the floor. Alvarez looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Alvarez has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Jones wants to control from the top but Alvarez keeps moving.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alvarez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Jones wants to control but Alvarez is keeping him busy.

Alvarez is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Jones's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Jones wants to control but Alvarez is keeping him busy.
Jones is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Alvarez can do to turn this around?
Jones throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Alvarez blocking the ground and pound attempt from Jones.

Jones is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Alvarez doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Jones.

Jones seems to be working for a kimura but Alvarez defends the submission attempt.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Jones wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Alvarez manages to pass to side control.
Jones wants to control but Alvarez is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Alvarez thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Alvarez seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Jones is trying to stand up here but Alvarez is controlling him well.
Jones has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Alvarez is working away from the top position though.
Alvarez is taking a breather. Jones says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Jones avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Alvarez.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Alvarez is working for a kimura but Jones is defending it quite comfortably.
Jones knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Alvarez on the ground.
Jones keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Roger Jones will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Alvarez tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Alvarez leaves Jones with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Alvarez doesn't manage to clinch there - Jones circles away.

Alvarez bucks up and tries to throw Jones off but instead Jones has got his back!

Alvarez manages to reverse the position and now he's in Jones's guard. Nice work there by Alvarez.
Alvarez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jones swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Jones has his foot on Alvarez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Alvarez works his way back into a safe position though.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Jones keeping moving, preventing Alvarez from controlling successfully.

Alvarez got a little sloppy there for a moment and Jones has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Alvarez has managed to get both his arms back between Jones's legs - danger averted.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Jones wants to stand and escape but Alvarez is having none of it.

Jones tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Alvarez tries to clinch up.
Alvarez avoids the head kick by Jones.
Alvarez tries to clinch there but Jones circles away.

Alvarez takes the fight into the clinch.
Alvarez takes a knee right on the jaw!
Alvarez is trying to pull guard but Jones turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Jones scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Alvarez doesn't seem bothered though.

Jones connects with a high kick.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Jones working some nice short punches in the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Alvarez drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Jones gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Alvarez tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

And that's the end of the fight!
Roger Jones showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Jones, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
