Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ron Gates (ranked 8426 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marco Simoes (ranked 5669 p4p, 519 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ron Gates! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Marco Simoes! The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Radbod Blank and Paulsen Ambrosius.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Simoes fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Simoes should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Gates circles away from the clinch attempt and Gates counters with a single leg into guard. Simoes didn't expect that. Simoes wants to get back to his feet but Gates passes into half guard.
Simoes wants to control but Gates is keeping busy.
Simoes tries to get to full guard but Gates has control of the leg. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gates is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Simoes controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Simoes trying to hold on to Gates's head to control him but Gates postures up.

Gates is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Simoes is just riding it out for now. Gates eventually gives up the hold. Gates is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Gates is thwarting Simoes's attempts to control the position. Simoes tries to roll over but Gates keeps him under control. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Gates lands a nice short elbow.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Simoes has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gates is working away from the top position though. Gates thows a huge punch but Simoes dodges it nicely.
Simoes blocking the ground and pound attempt from Gates. Gates scoring with strikes to the body and head. Gates seems to be working for a kimura but Simoes defends the submission attempt. Gates winds up and cracks Simoes with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Simoes is trying to control but can't.
Gates missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Simoes is trying to maintain the position but Gates is very close to passing his half guard. Simoes wants to get back to full guard. Gates looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Gates seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Gates is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Simoes defends it well. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Gates is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Simoes sees it coming and defends easily. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Simoes has closed the distance and engaged Gates in a clinch.
Simoes lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage. Simoes is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Gates gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Simoes fails to pull guard.
Simoes jumps guard but Gates turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing. Ron Gates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marco Simoes. Simoes gets underhooks to prevent Gates's takedown attempt.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Simoes looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Gates passes into side control.

That's one minute gone in the round. Gates prevents Simoes from getting the reversal. Gates lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Simoes tries to hold on but Gates postures up. Gates looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet. Gates is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Simoes can do to turn this around? Simoes tries to improve his position but instead Gates has taken his back! Simoes tries to escape but Gates has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gates tightening his grip on Simoes, looking for the choke. Gates looking for the RNC. Simoes trying to control but not successfully. Gates has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Simoes has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

That's three minutes gone in the round. Gates working for the choke. Gates lands a shot to the body. Simoes tries to escape but Gates has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Simoes wants to get back to his feet. Simoes wants to escape the position.
Gates is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Simoes looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ron Gates dominated that second round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Gates drives through with a takedown into guard. Simoes is wriggling around but Gates manages to pass to half guard.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Simoes holds on and takes a little breather. Gates connects with a couple of short punches. Gates won't allow Simoes to get back to his feet. That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Simoes is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Simoes looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gates is one step ahead there.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Simoes takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Gates keeps the fight on the outside. Simoes wants to clinch up but Gates keeps it at a distance. Simoes moves into range and clinches up with Gates. Gates has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Simoes avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Simoes tries for a takedown. No joy.

Gates seems to be working for a kimura but Simoes defends the submission attempt. Simoes is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Gates scores with a couple of nice shots. Simoes is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Gates jumps into side control!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Simoes is looking to regain half guard here but Gates keeps moving and retains side control. Gates has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Gates wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Simoes, who protects the arm well. Gates landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Gates is trying to get an arm triangle but Simoes is defending well. Marco Simoes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Ron Gates is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Gates working the head and body with strikes.
And that's the end of the fight! Ron Gates showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gates, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
