PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gregory McVaughn (ranked 2861 p4p, 304 weight class) and Brandon Stark (ranked 1845 p4p, 217 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 6 - 2, fighting out of New York, Gregory McVaughn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 20 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brandon Stark!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Cecil Peabody and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stark shoots in but no luck this time.
Stark fails in his attempt to clinch.
Stark misses with an uppercut.
McVaughn avoids the head kick by Stark.
Stark throws a half hearted mid kick.

Stark forces McVaughn back against the cage and clinches.
Stark's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
McVaughn lands a hook that snaps the head of Stark backwards.
McVaughn keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Stark's efforts to push away.

McVaughn swings wildly with an uppercut but Stark uses good head movement to avoid it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stark makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.

Stark jumps guard but McVaughn stands there with Stark around his waist. Stark gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Stark is trying to maintain a safe position but McVaughn gets an underhook and turns Stark into the cage.

McVaughn lands with a short shot to the head.

Stark tightens his grip and picks McVaughn up, before dumping him to the ground. McVaughn manages to land in guard.
Stark tries to free his leg and advance position but McVaughn is retaining full guard.
McVaughn has his hands on Stark's head, controlling the position.
McVaughn controls Stark momentarily but Stark frees himself.
McVaughn has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
McVaughn has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

McVaughn wants to control but Stark postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Stark postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
McVaughn is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Stark misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

My spies in Touch Of Death Combat Academy inform me that Stark has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Stark is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, McVaughn has escaped the position, nice work there.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Stark wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by McVaughn, who protects the arm well.

McVaughn tries to improve position but can't.
Stark has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
McVaughn can't do much from the bottom here.
Stark lands a decent elbow from side control.

Stark wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by McVaughn, who protects the arm well.

Stark is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but McVaughn is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

You can see the frustration on McVaughn's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
McVaughn is looking to reverse the position.

Stark thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
McVaughn is not content to let Stark control the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
McVaughn is trying to control Stark's posture but Stark avoids it.
Stark in side control, just content to control the action for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brandon Stark dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


McVaughn chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Stark can pounce on him.
McVaughn tries to clinch but Stark is having none of it.
Stark looks like he wanted to counter with a high kick but didn't throw it.
Stark bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
McVaughn takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
McVaughn looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Stark throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
McVaughn tried to score with a low kick but Stark checks it.
Gregory McVaughn is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Stark goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
McVaughn will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Stark changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. McVaughn tries to avoid it but Stark manages to keep hold of a leg and drag McVaughn to the ground. McVaughn escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
McVaughn looks to land a right hand but Stark moved out of range.

Brandon Stark seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McVaughn fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Stark is out of range.
Stark works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Stark missing with a left hand there. McVaughn was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
McVaughn ducks under a wild hook from Stark.
McVaughn was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Stark throws a leg kick that misses.

Good exchange - McVaughn coming out on top.
Stark tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

McVaughn misses with an uppercut. Stark saw that one coming.
Stark misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
McVaughn throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Stark on the side of the head.

Stark has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics McVaughn uses from the top position.
Stark wants to sweep here but McVaughn controlling him for the moment.
McVaughn has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
McVaughn working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Stark not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
McVaughn wants to stand but Stark has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
McVaughn slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
McVaughn tries to free his leg and advance position but Stark is retaining full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Stark goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
McVaughn loads up on a big right hand but Stark slips the punch.

Stark tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. McVaughn manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

and McVaughn counters with a straight right hand.
McVaughn moves into range and connects with a jab.
Gregory McVaughn is winning the standup battle so far.
Stark lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Stark throws a low kick but it's checked well by McVaughn.

No joy there for McVaughn, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Stark throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent McVaughn stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
McVaughn takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Stark throws a push kick but McVaughn slaps the foot to one side.

Stark shoots in and bounces McVaughn off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

McVaughn pulls Stark in close to prevent any damage.
McVaughn avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Stark drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Stark jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

That was a close second round but I would say that Gregory McVaughn will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

McVaughn tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Stark manages to circle out of the way.
Stark pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces McVaughn back to the cage. Stark follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
McVaughn throws a hook to the side of Stark's head but Stark sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

McVaughn gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Stark fails to pull the fight into his guard.
McVaughn is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Stark is defending well for now.

This has been an exciting period of action!

McVaughn digs a right hand underneath Stark's ribcage. Stark let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Stark is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables McVaughn to keep the fight standing.
Gregory McVaughn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brandon Stark.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Stark accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Stark swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by McVaughn.
Stark pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Stark shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts McVaughn as he jumps to the side.
Stark closes this distance looking for a takedown but McVaughn circles away.
Stark missing with a left hand there. McVaughn was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Stark closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Stark lands in his opponent's guard.
Stark pushes down on McVaughn's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Stark takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
McVaughn pushes Stark off looking to stand but Stark dives back in and keeps control.
Stark looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Stark is working for a kimura but McVaughn is defending it quite comfortably.
McVaughn looks like he's trying to stand up.

Stark is working for a submission of some sort.
McVaughn tries to get to full guard but Stark has control of the leg.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Brandon Stark.
I think Stark has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
