Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
31 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Helge Fossmo! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Corey Mcgraugh! The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Daniel Franklin and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mcgraugh throws a left and a right that both miss
enabling Fossmo to counter with a crisp jab. Mcgraugh is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Fossmo. Fossmo appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick. Some wild striking there from Mcgraugh.
An attempted straight right counter from Fossmo misses the target. Mcgraugh closes the distance and clinches. Mcgraugh makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut. Mcgraugh scores with a shoulder strike. Fossmo wants the takedown. Mcgraugh is fighting it off but Fossmo persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Mcgraugh's guard against the ropes. Fossmo throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mcgraugh works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Mcgraugh really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Fossmo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Fossmo controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Fossmo sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Mcgraugh's guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mcgraugh can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fossmo controlling the action here. Fossmo looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Mcgraugh with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Mcgraugh is looking to improve his position.
Fossmo working the head and body with strikes. Fossmo stalling. Fossmo drops an elbow to the side of Mcgraugh's head. Fossmo has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Mcgraugh defend it? Fossmo steps over the head and cranks it - Mcgraugh is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Fossmo!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Helge Fossmo! Helge Fossmo retains his heavyweight title! After winning the bout, Helge Fossmo thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
