Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Benton Riggs! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Willis! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Cecil Peabody and Gwen Towbar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Willis throws a right hand that Riggs ducks under and follows up with a left that Riggs also avoids with ease. Willis throws a head kick that misses and Riggs counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Riggs. Riggs drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Riggs jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Riggs looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Willis is working an open guard so Riggs takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Riggs swings and misses with a hook to the body.
A head kick by Willis misses and Riggs moves into the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Willis pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Willis swings for the body but Riggs moves out of range.
Willis looks winded! Willis throws a sloppy head kick so Riggs counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Riggs decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Riggs wants to clinch up but Willis keeps it at a distance. Willis throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Riggs counters with a nice double leg into guard. Riggs stands up and waves to Willis to follow him. Willis avoids the head kick by Riggs.
Riggs looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Willis! Willis tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
That's two minutes gone in the round. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Riggs controlling the pace for now. Riggs is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet! Riggs instigates a clinch. Riggs ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Riggs no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Riggs is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Willis has his hands clasped together but Riggs extends and breaks Willis's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Riggs.
