PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jerede Baya (ranked 2508 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryo Tanaka (ranked 841 p4p, 98 weight class). The key to victory for Jerede Baya has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jerede Baya!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Ryo Tanaka!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Winston Alpacca and Michael Johnstone.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Baya tries to clinch there but Tanaka circles away.
Ryo Tanaka seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Baya doesn't manage to clinch there - Tanaka circles away.
Tanaka steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Baya.
Baya looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Tanaka is fending him off so far but Baya persists. Nope, Tanaka circles away and we're back to standing.
Baya tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Tanaka manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Tanaka throws out a counter right but Baya avoids it with no problem.
Tanaka misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Baya throws a big counter combination but Tanaka scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Tanaka avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Baya closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Tanaka throws a hook but Baya blocks it.
Baya bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Baya tries to clinch but Tanaka moves out of range.
It seemed like Tanaka was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Baya throws a series of punches but Tanaka moves out of range.
Baya doesn't manage to clinch there - Tanaka circles away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Baya changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Tanaka tries to avoid it but Baya manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Tanaka to the ground. Tanaka escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Tanaka now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Baya fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jerede Baya. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Tanaka bobbing and weaving well here. And he's unloaded with a massive right hand that drops Baya! He dives into his guard looking to finish!


Baya is rocked!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Tanaka content to stall in guard here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Baya throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Tanaka looking to pass the guard.
Tanaka controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Tanaka drops back, looking for a kneebar! Baya looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Baya looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Baya!

Tanaka tries to buck Baya off but Baya is having none of it.
Baya wants to control but Tanaka is keeping him busy.
Tanaka tries to bench press Baya off him but Baya keeps the position.
Tanaka is not content to let Baya control the position.
Tanaka controls the position for a moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Tanaka prevents Baya from moving into mount.
Baya working away.
Tanaka keeping his opponent close.
Baya wants to stand but Tanaka is controlling his arm.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Baya wants to control for a moment but Tanaka uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.

Tanaka looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Tanaka keeping hold of Baya's head, controlling as best he can.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Baya shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Tanaka but Tanaka pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Ryo Tanaka is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Baya throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Tanaka avoids the body shot from Baya.
Baya takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Baya doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Baya throws a head kick that misses.
Baya takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ryo Tanaka dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Tanaka lands a nice looking body shot.
Tanaka looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Baya darts in looking for a takedown but Tanaka gets double underhooks and turns Baya into the cage.
Baya needs to keep his hands up - Tanaka had a free shot at his head there.
Today's fight clock is brought to you by... OOOH that's a huge shot by Tanaka! Baya is in big trouble here - the ref steps in to save him and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:19 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ryo Tanaka!
A relieved looking Ryo Tanaka thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
