Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Joe Russo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Paul Thomas Tarkovsky! The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Valeri Chadov and Ivan Kurochkin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Russo closes this distance looking for a takedown but Tarkovsky circles away. A nice combination there by Tarkovsky.
Tarkovsky swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Russo moves in looking to clinch but Tarkovsky pushes him off. Russo tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Tarkovsky paws at him with a jab and circles away. Tarkovsky misses with a double jab
and Russo counters with a takedown into side control. Tarkovsky wants to control but Russo postures up. Tarkovsky taking punishment in the form of punches.
Tarkovsky is trying to improve his position. Russo lands a nice forearm strike. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Tarkovsky can do anything to dispel that myth. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. You can see the frustration on Tarkovsky's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Tarkovsky tries to escape but Russo is in control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Tarkovsky sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Russo really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Tarkovsky looks like he's trying to stand up.
Russo will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Tarkovsky is looking to control Russo's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Tarkovsky avoid being mounted? Tarkovsky is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Russo scores with a couple of nice shots. Tarkovsky wants to get back to his feet. Tarkovsky has one foot on Russo's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Tarkovsky getting the better of the striking in that exchange. Russo needs to keep his hands up - Tarkovsky had a free shot at his head there. Tarkovsky swings for the body but Russo moves out of range.
Russo tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Tarkovsky manages to circle out of the way. Tarkovsky fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Russo manages to avoid it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Russo ducks under a wild hook from Tarkovsky. Russo wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch. Paul Thomas Tarkovsky seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Tarkovsky fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Russo looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Russo tries to clinch up and Tarkovsky counters with a lovely straight right hand! Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Russo slips a jab and a cross from Tarkovsky.
Tarkovsky lands with a hook. Russo tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Russo is rocked! Tarkovsky throws a head kick but Russo moves out of range.
Oh Russo is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Tarkovsky has Russo up against the cage in a clinch.
Tarkovsky's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Tarkovsky throws a monster overhand right that drops Russo! Tarkovsky follows up with more strikes from mount and the fight is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Paul Thomas Tarkovsky! A very excited looking Paul Thomas Tarkovsky rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
