PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alexander Porto (ranked 1788 p4p, 279 weight class) and Willie Wood (ranked 3908 p4p, 486 weight class). Willie Wood told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Alexander Porto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Willie Wood!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wood throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Porto.

Wood has Porto up against the cage in a clinch.
Wood lands with a short head shot on the inside.
Porto lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Wood or not.
Wood scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Wood misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Porto.
Porto tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Wood tries a knee to the head but Porto blocks it.
Porto blocks an uppercut.
A nice left hand lands by Wood.
Porto lands a right hand that snaps the head of Wood backwards.
Wood scores with a nice hook to the head.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Wood throws a punch but it's blocked by Porto.
Wood lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Porto misses with an elbow strike.
Wood doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Wood lands a shoulder strike.
Porto can't find room to land a body shot as Wood controls the action.
Porto misses with a body punch.
Porto drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Wood gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Wood throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Porto blocks it with crossed arms.

Wood scores with a shoulder strike.

Porto jumps guard.
Porto is pulling down on Wood's head to control his posture.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Porto working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Wood doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Wood manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Wood decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Porto, up you get!

Wood swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Porto tries to pull guard but Wood forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Porto pulls Wood in close to his closed guard and prevents Wood from doing any damage or advancing position.

Porto is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Wood is aware though and is defending well.
Wood is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Porto is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Wood felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Porto takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Alexander Porto overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Porto is trying to control. Wood wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Porto takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Wood punishes Porto's body with a nice straight punch.
Porto wants to clinch
enabling Wood to counter with a crisp jab.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Wood turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
A solid leg kick lands there for Wood.
Porto swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Wood bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

A nice right hand lands inside from Porto.

Willie Wood showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Wood throws a hook to the side of Porto's head but Porto sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Porto is looking to counter the offense by Wood and move into the clinch.
Wood is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

Wood lands a big head kick that sends Porto tumbling to the mat! Wood takes a step backwards and waves Porto back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Oh Porto is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Wood lands a brutal uppercut that launches Porto off his feet! Porto tumbles to the floor, barely conscious - the referee jumps in to save him from a beating! Wow, what an ending!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:47 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Willie Wood!
Willie Wood seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
