Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Chael Sonnen! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Randy Tessin! The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Steven Brown and Donald Grub.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A right-left combo lands from Tessin. Sonnen stuffs the takedown attempt from Tessin. Tessin gets slowly back to his feet. Sonnen definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Tessin misses with a right hand and Sonnen counters with a takedown into side control. Tessin tries to bench press Sonnen off him but Sonnen keeps the position. Tessin is still trying to improve position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sonnen working the head with strikes. Tessin takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
This has been an exciting period of action! Sonnen landing a few strikes. Tessin tries to improve position but can't. Tessin takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. Sonnen has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Tessin tries to improve position but can't. Sonnen wants to stand but Tessin is controlling his arm. Tessin manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Tessin looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Sonnen lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
It looks like Randy Tessin has been cut. Sonnen is trying to control. Tessin wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
That's one minute gone in the round. Tessin is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Sonnen pulls his head out easily. Sonnen looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Tessin with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Sonnen lands a big elbow - Tessin is out of it! He's waving his arms around but his eyes are closed and he's not intelligently defending himself - the ref has no choice but to jump in and stop the fight! This one is in the books! A TKO win for Sonnen!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:32 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Chael Sonnen! Chael Sonnen retains his welterweight title! A very excited looking Chael Sonnen made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
