Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Eric Staal (ranked 331 p4p, 42 weight class) and Mario Puzo (ranked 341 p4p, 45 weight class). Puzo has chosen Speak Softly Love as his entrance music. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 25 - 10 - 1, fighting out of New York, Eric Staal!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 26 - 16 - 2, fighting out of New York, Mario Puzo!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Staal scores with a jab to the body.

Eric Staal seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Puzo lands a leg kick that knocks Staal off balance momentarily.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Staal takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Puzo lands with a shot to the body.

Staal throws a leg kick but Puzo sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Puzo feints and then cracks Staal's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Staal down.

Puzo closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Staal wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Staal throws a combination. Puzo tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

Staal on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

Puzo ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Staal misses with a kick to the body.
Staal looks to score with a jab to the body but Puzo is just out of range.
Puzo doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Staal's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Puzo connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Staal scrambles back to his feet.

It looked like Staal was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Puzo.

Puzo smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Mario Puzo is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

That was a close round but I would say that Eric Staal will probably get the nod.

Puzo shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Staal eats them both and turns towards Puzo to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Puzo fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Staal.

The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Puzo has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Puzo and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Eric Staal.
Well Staal has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
