Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Zeke Garcia! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, David Otieno! The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Radbod Blank and Nard Betker.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Garcia connects with a right hand. Otieno shakes it off. Otieno uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Garcia. A bone on bone clash there as Garcia blocks the leg kick.
An attempted straight right counter from Garcia misses the target. Garcia misses with an uppercut. Garcia waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Otieno. Garcia lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Garcia throws a series of punches but Otieno avoids them all with ease. Otieno follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land. Garcia fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Nice defenses there by Garcia. Otieno fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Otieno dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Garcia. That did some damage! Otieno lands with a hook. Garcia tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. A nice leg kick lands there from Otieno. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Garcia fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Otieno manages to avoid it. Garcia comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. A slow jab from Otieno misses its intended target. Garcia lands a head shot. Some wild striking there from Garcia.
Otieno swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
That's one minute gone in the round. Otieno scores with a jab. Garcia acknowledges it with a nod of the head. Otieno takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. An inside leg kick lands from Otieno. Otieno tries to work over Garcia's front leg with a kick but Garcia checks it. Garcia was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit. Garcia pivots, looking for a leg kick but Otieno is out of range and Garcia settles back down. Garcia chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Otieno can pounce on him.
Otieno steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Garcia. Otieno looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Garcia dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Garcia throws out a leg kick but Otieno moves out of range and Garcia only half commits. Otieno keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Garcia. A right-left combo lands from Garcia. Otieno fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Garcia. This has been an exciting period of action! Garcia throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Garcia throws a right hand that Otieno ducks under and follows up with a left that Otieno also avoids with ease. Garcia stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Otieno. A big left from Garcia misses. Garcia misses with a few strikes there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Otieno buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
A big left from Otieno misses. An inside leg kick lands from Otieno. A slow jab from Otieno misses its intended target. Garcia lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Otieno circles away quickly and effectively. Garcia misses with a straight right. Otieno clinches with his opponent.
Otieno jumps guard.
Garcia would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Otieno had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Garcia defends it easily. Otieno manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Garcia manages to get himself to full guard.
Garcia knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Otieno on the ground. Otieno stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Garcia swivels though and keeps the full guard. Otieno forces his way into half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Otieno is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Garcia is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:22 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). David Otieno! In defeat, Zeke Garcia stepped up to the mic, saying 'It is what it is. I just have to go back to the drawing board.'.
