PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Shawn Griffin (ranked 1907 p4p, 210 weight class) and Jao Rua (ranked 3163 p4p, 318 weight class). Griffin kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Medicate - Flaw. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shawn Griffin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jao Rua!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Igor Prikhodko and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin throws a combination that misses

and Rua counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Rua.

Griffin escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Rua gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Rua passes Griffin's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Rua wants to take a breather but Griffin is having none of it.
Griffin wants to improve his position but Rua is controlling well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Griffin definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Rua is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Griffin is just riding it out for now. Rua eventually gives up the hold.

Rua drops back looking for a leg! Griffin is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Griffin manages to kick Rua off! Rua jumps back into Griffin's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Griffin is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes.

Jao Rua dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Griffin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Rua got a little sloppy there for a moment and Griffin has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Rua has managed to get both his arms back between Griffin's legs - danger averted.

Griffin looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Griffin scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Griffin winds up and cracks Rua with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
The fighters are battling for position here. Rua manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Rua felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Jao Rua showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Griffin misses with a two punch combination.
Rua lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Rua.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Rua, as that shot connected.
Griffin throws a right and a left that Rua avoids nicely.
It seemed like Rua was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Griffin shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Griffin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Rua is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Griffin off and has taken his back!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Rua is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Griffin knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Griffin for a finish.
You can see the frustration on Griffin's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Rua is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Griffin defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Griffin refuses to tap and goes to sleep, forcing the referee to intervene. A little trickle of blood came out of Griffin's nose as his head slumped to the floor. That is naaaasty!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Jao Rua!
Jao Rua really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Top Nutrition 160Q200$ 140Q150$ 100Q50$ logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
