Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Clarence Benson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gabe Wilson! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Columbo Gatti and Anthony Taglia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Wilson stuffs the takedown attempt from Benson. Benson gets slowly back to his feet. Benson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Wilson napping and manages to drive through into side control! What's Wilson going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle. Wilson gets back to half guard. Wilson trying to control from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Wilson has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Benson is on him like a limpet, forcing Wilson back against the cage. Benson manages to break the clinch.
Benson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Wilson swivels and escapes.
That's one minute gone in the round. Wilson goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
It looks like Clarence Benson has been cut. Gabe Wilson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Wilson drives through with a takedown into Benson's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Benson wants to stand but Wilson is controlling the position. Wilson would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Wilson lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Wilson passes Benson's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Benson is trying to get back to full guard. Benson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Wilson is trying to control the action in half guard but Benson is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Wilson stops Benson from getting back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wilson content to control rather than advance. Wilson looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Benson with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Benson trying to control but Wilson postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Benson looks like he's trying to stand up.
Benson is positioning himself well to prevent Wilson advancing to mount. Wilson trying to control the action but Benson is working from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wilson with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Benson avoids the head kick by Wilson.
Wilson gets a takedown into half guard. Benson has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Wilson is working away from the top position though. Wilson gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Wilson moves into the clinch. Wilson looking for a takedown. Wilson breaks from the clinch.
Wilson fails with a takedown attempt. Wilson defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Benson. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Clarence Benson. That's going to take a lot out of him. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Wilson takes the fight into the clinch. Wilson tries to break free but Benson pushes him back against the cage. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Gabe Wilson dominated that round. The cut man is working on Clarence Benson's cut. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Benson shoots in for a takedown but Wilson shows good takedown defense. Wilson throws a head kick that half lands.
Benson is rocked! Wilson lands a huge takedown. Benson is out but the ref is slow to react and Wilson lands 3 more undefended punches before the fight is stopped. Brutal finish. Benson lies on the canvas for a good minute before the doctors bring him round. Good to see he's OK.
