Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Uri Romanov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Alexander Matthews! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Daniel Cesar and Edson Gomes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Matthews has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Romanov. Matthews throws a body shot but no joy. Matthews drives through with a takedown into Romanov's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Matthews must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Matthews trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Romanov pulls Matthews in close to prevent any damage. Romanov striking off his back, scoring a few points. Matthews stands up over Romanov, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Romanov is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Matthews wants to get back to full guard. Romanov not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Romanov stops Matthews from getting back to his feet.
Romanov wants to stand but Matthews has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matthews has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Romanov is working away from the top position though. Matthews really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Romanov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Romanov works his way into full mount! Romanov jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Matthews manages to avoid the submission attempt. Matthews is trying to improve his position. Romanov advances to mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Matthews is squirming around, avoiding Romanov's attempts to control the action. Romanov sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! Matthews working to try and regain half guard.
Romanov is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Matthews can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Romanov trying to control but Matthews is having none of it. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Matthews really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Matthews is trying to stand but he's not in a good position to be doing that! Romanov has taken his back! Romanov is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Matthews taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Romanov.
