Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Andrew May! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jim Thomas! The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Kenichi Hosakawa and Shigeki Fujiwara.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Thomas shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Thomas seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Thomas is pressing down on May's thigh, looking to free his foot. May is holding on for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Thomas takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Thomas is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and May defends it well. Thomas seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Thomas is looking for a kimura but May is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Thomas to get the leverage. Thomas with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. May is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Thomas scores with a couple of nice shots.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Thomas is taking a breather. May says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. It looks like Thomas might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. May is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Thomas scores with a couple of nice shots.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. May tries to roll over but Thomas keeps him under control. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Thomas in particular looking to stall. Thomas decides to return to a standing position. Thomas tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Thomas instigates a clinch. Thomas gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, May regains guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! May looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Thomas passes into half guard.
Thomas seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. May is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
