PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Dom Cruz (ranked 347 p4p, 9 weight class) and Kalevi Koski (ranked 451 p4p, 16 weight class). Kalevi Koski told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dom Cruz!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kalevi Koski!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Kenichi Hosakawa and Yukihiro Yamamoto.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cruz dives in and grabs Koski's left leg, looking for a takedown. Koski pushes down on Cruz's head and hops out.
Koski misses with a wild body shot.
Koski throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Cruz sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Koski looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Koski tries a head kick but it misses.
Koski tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Cruz lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Koski circles away quickly and effectively.
Koski throws out a counter right but Cruz avoids it with no problem.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cruz has his foot on Koski's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Koski works his way back into a safe position though.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cruz has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Koski is working away from the top position though.

Cruz avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Cruz throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Cruz tries to clinch but Koski is having none of it.
Koski appeared to try and counter that last move with a leg kick.
Koski misses with an uppercut. Cruz saw that one coming.

Koski connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Cruz's hands.
Cruz drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Cruz walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

Cruz scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Cruz is trying hard to land a takedown here. Koski sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Cruz looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Koski with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Cruz seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Cruz got a little sloppy there for a moment and Koski has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Cruz has managed to get both his arms back between Koski's legs - danger averted.

Dom Cruz dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


A slapping body kick lands there for Koski.
Cruz looks to land a right hand but Koski moved out of range.
Koski throws a shot from downtown. Cruz moves away and avoids it.

and Koski counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Cruz displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Koski throws out the jab.

That kick from Koski tenderised Cruz's leg. Cruz is trying to keep his angry face on.

Koski fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Cruz manages to avoid it.
It looked like Cruz was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

The strikes coming from Cruz are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Cruz has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

That was a close round but Dom Cruz did the better work so I'd imagine he'll take it.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Cruz shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Koski eats them both and turns towards Cruz to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Koski scores with a hook to the body. Cruz takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Jab, jab by Koski - just one landing.
Cruz throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Koski cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Koski connects with a nice looking jab.
Oh Cruz is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Cruz misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Cruz closes the distance and clinches up with Koski, looking for a takedown. Cruz pushes Koski against the cage but Koski circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

and Koski makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Cruz seems to have got his legs back now.
Koski lands a nice leg kick that just misses Cruz's sensitive parts.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The crowd cheers as Koski lands an impressive looking overhand right. Cruz doesn't seem phased though.
Cruz chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Koski can pounce on him.
Cruz takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dom Cruz. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Cruz shoots in for a double leg but Koski sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:43 of round 4, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Kalevi Koski!

A relieved looking Kalevi Koski thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
