PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Steve Butabi (ranked 1167 p4p, 137 weight class) and Ross Warring (ranked 831 p4p, 110 weight class). Butabi comes into the arena with Make That Money blaring out of the sound system. Warring is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Sleep Now in the Fire. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ross Warring!
The judges for this bout are Francis DeMontford, Skip Squint and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Butabi misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Warring.
We've been hearing reports that Butabi has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Butabi is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Warring's half guard.

Butabi is trying to work for a kimura but Warring is defending well.
Warring wants to control but Butabi is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Warring felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Warring is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Butabi uses his free foot to push down on Warring's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Warring.

Butabi is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Warring can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Butabi goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Warring turns into him and now he's in Butabi's guard.
Butabi is looking to sweep but instead, Warring has passed into half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Butabi is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Warring swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Butabi shoots in for a takedown but Warring shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
A little jabbing left from Warring on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Butabi will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Warring! But no joy.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Warring can do anything to dispel that myth.

Warring has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Butabi is on him like a limpet, forcing Warring back against the cage.

That was a close second round but I would say that Steve Butabi will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
